| EKC Honors Over 100 Quilters from the Area |
On Thursday, April 23, over 100 quilters from the East King County Lutheran churches showed up to a luncheon in their honor at First Lutheran in Bothell. Beginning at 9 AM quilters arrived with quilts in hand; some to work on and some to donate to two local charities. From 9 to 10:30 quilters shared tips and techniques. With 100 quilters in a church basement, you can image that the energy level was high! At about 10:30 representatives from two local non-profits shared a bit about their organization and how the quilts that have been received are distributed. Teresa Andrade, from Hopelink and Doreen Booth, from Eastside Baby Corner provided strong encouragement to the quilters with stories how these gifts of love and labor have made a difference in the lives of people living right here on the Eastside. A time followed in which a representative from each church shared briefly shared about their quilting group. As they were sharing, a running tally was kept of the number of quilters and quilts made: over 200 quilters have produced over 2,000 quilts this past year! To recognize and honor the church efforts, the East King County chapter of Thrivent presented each group with a $25 VISA gift card that can be used to purchase supplies at the groups discretion.
A wonderful meal was provided for the group of luncheon sandwiches, couscous, fruit and vegetables followed by a beautiful cake decorated as a quilt. Before the event concluded 18 baby quilts were received by Eastside Baby Corner and 16 quilts were received by Hopelink.
As summer arrives the desire is to be outside as much as possible. If you are looking for a way to combine outside activties with meaningful service, consider working on a Habitat for Humanity/Thrivent Builds house. There are two houses being built this summer in the Snoqualmie Ridge area and LOTS of help is needed. To volunteer, go to www.habitatekc.org/volunteers to start the registration process. Volunteer as a family, as a church or as an organization and make the building a day of fun! Work is done on the houses rain or shine! What if you don't know a hammer from a handsaw? That's OK. You will be put to work, depending upon your skill level. There is an age requirement: volunteers working on the site must be over age 16 (16 and 17 needs to have a parent with them). If you don't want to do the build part, or if you want to get your youth group involved, consider donating a meal for the volunteers working. Food is ALWAYS appreciated. Contact Bob Spencer at bob@spencered.org or info@habitatekc.org. Phone calls can be made to the EKC Habitat for Humanity office at 425-869-6007
| 4th Annual Golf Tournament & Auction 2009 |
It's time to pull out the golf clubs, do some stretching and sign up for the 4th Annual Habitat for Humanity East King County Golf Tournament and Auction. This event has become a major fundraiser for the EKC Thrivent Builds and Habitat for Humanity, and it's just a lot of fun! The purpose of the Golf Tournament is to help fund two Thrivent Builds homes that will be built the summer of 2009. For the past several years Lutherans have been instrumental in helping with financing and manpower for these homes through the Thrivent Builds program. Thrivent Financial provides 65% of the funding for each Thrivent Builds home and the remaining 35% comes from the fundraising efforts of the East King County Thrivent chapter and Habitat for Humanity EKC. The phenomenal success of the Golf Tournaments have meant that the 27 local East King County Lutheran churches have been able to focus on additional participation, without feeling pressured to commit a line-item budget to participate.
Part of the appeal has been the location: the Bear Creek Country Club provides the backdrop for the day, which inspires many to pull out the clubs and put together a foursome. Tee time is at 11:30 with a shotgun start. Following a day of golf is a social hour and dinner at the country club. Of course, guests are invited to attend the dinner, even if they did not golf that day!
To date, Thrivent Builds volunteers have built more than 1000 homes across the USA. These two new homes will be the 6th and 7th houses that Habitat for Humanity of EKC has built through the Thrivent Builds Homes project.
For more information contact Jodi Bridges, Special Events and Communications Officer at jbridges@habitatekc.org or 425-869-6007. Registration for the banquet and auction only is $50 and includes a donation to Habitat as well.
