News from the Gulf Coast Chapter of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans

SINTON, TEXAS HOSTS 2004 ANNUAL MEETING

Over 100 Thrivent Financail members met at the Back Street Cafe in Sinton, Texas on November 13, 2004 to conduct the annual meeting and elect Chapter Leaders for 2005.  Lutheran Community Services Specialist Mary Jo Pfeiffer explained the Thrivent Financial for Lutherans project of helping hurricane victims in Florida and other states affected by hurricane damage in 2004.  The National Board of Directors Elections were explained, and everyone was reminded to vote for Board of Directors as outlined in the Winter issue of the Thrivent Magazine.  Ballots must be received by Schenck SC by December 10, 2004.
Those attending enjoyed a meal consisting of chicken fried steak or fried catfish.  The bean pot and salad bar was a big hit with everyone.  President Leroy DeHaven recapped the projects that the congregation conducted in 2004, and congratulated all for their hard work, effort and voluntary time.  The Gulf Coast Chapter of Thriven Financial for Lutherans began the year with $26,535 for Care Abounds in Communities™ projects.  As was announced at the annual meeting, you found worthwhile, needy causes, formed a congregational service team, and got the job done, utilizing all the funding available.  Needy children, Lutheran World Relief, handicapped, and Bokenkamp were some of the recipients.  Congratulations for "jobs" well done!
Highlight of the day was the presentation of THE TEXAS REGION ADULT VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR AWARD to Elaine Brundrett by Mary Jo Pfeiffer.  Congratulations to Elaine Vice-President of the Gulf Coast Chapter for being chosen as our region's Volunteer of the Year.  If you have attended any Lutheran associated event this year, you saw Elaine right in the thick of it.  Elaine and husband Raymond are huge supporters of Thrivent Financial.  Their dedication and service are deeply appreciated. For pictures and more highlights go to the chapter website: www.lutheransonline.com/gulfcoastchapter.
Hardly anyone went away disappointed as door prizes were handed out.  Everyone had a chance to win the 21" color TV plus other prizes, including 20 dollar bills.  If you are a Thrivent Financial member, either benefit or associate, be on the look out for next years annual meeting.  In the meantime, ask one of your congregational coordinators how you can become involved in activites that enhance your church and community.

                                                CHAPTER REALIGNMENT APPROVED

We will miss Donna Mills and Nancy Lee next year.  These two 2004 Directors of the Gulf Coast Chapter will be moving with the counties of Live Oak and Frio to the Atascosa-Wilson County Chapter area.  Nancy lives in George West and was our Records Director.  Donna resides near Three Rivers and served as Events Director.  This shifting of Live Oak and Frio Counties from the Gulf Coast Chapter to the Atascosa-Wilson County Chapter was approved by the Thrivent Financial National Board of Directors and will become effective January 1, 2005.  This could possibly affect available funds for 2005.  This will change the number of congregations in our chapter, but the addition of Donna and Nancy to just north of us is a big plus for that chapter.  The announcement came from Mary Jo Pfeiffer, our Lutheran Community Services Specialist.

Receipt Envelope...what's that???

Every chapter service team that receives funds through Care Abounds in Communities™ and the Care in Congregations® program must submit a receipt envelope to the chapter leadership board to document all donations, income and expenses.

Immediately upon completion of the fund-raiser or hands-on service activity, all receipts or copies of receipts should be placed in the receipt envelope, which is then placed in a mailing envelope and sent to the chapter's congregational service team director or other designated chapter leader. Do NOT send Care in Congregation fundraising dollars in the envelope—these funds should be forwarded directly to the beneficiary congregation.

For more information on receipt envelopes and how to submit them, please refer to CHIP, the online chapter resource guide, located at www.thrivent.com/members/chip and search on "submitting receipts."

WRAP UP 2004, NOW!!!

Does you congregation still have a "Care" project not yet complete?  Thrivent Financial may be holding funds for activities that have been completed in "Care In Congregations " and "Care Abounds In Communities" projects that you have completed, but not yet reported.  In order for recipients to receive funds in a timely manner, Congregation Service Teams and Congregational Coordinators must see that all the necessary reporting and paper work has been completed and turned into the chapter.  At this writing there are a number of approved activites that have not been completed.  Some are Thanksgiving and Christmas projects, but must be reported to the Chapter as COMPLETED, with all the necessary paperwork before the year ends.

GET READY FOR 2005

Chapter leaders from throughout Texas will meet near Houston in January to exchange ideas and experiences.  This is where we willl have the opportunity to network with chapter leaders from across the state and learn how to take our chapter to new heights in 2005. Activities begin with registration and an evening reception, and will continue with educational sessions designed specifically for chapter leaders.  We hope to report on that seminar in an upcoming issue of "THE WAVES."
Chapter leaders are reminded to make reservations by calling the hotel directly at 1-281-333-9300.  The conference code to get the discount rate is "TFL".  To keep up to date on information concerning this conference go go www.lutheransonline.com/rfo475.

MORE WORDS TO LIVE BY.......

When everything's coming your way, you're in the wrong lane!

Accept that some days you're the pigeon, and some days you're the statue.

If you can't be kind, at least have the decency to be vague.

If you lend someone $20. and never see that person again, it was probably worth it.

Never put both feet in your mouth at the same time, because then you don't have a leg
to stand on.

You may be the only person in the world, but you may also be the world to one person.

We could learn a lot from crayons:  Some are sharp, some are pretty, some are dull, some have weird names, and all are different colors...but they all have to learn to live in the same box.

It may be that your sole purpose in life is simply to serve as a warning to others.

Eat a live toad in the morning and nothing worse will happen to you for the rest of the day.

THANKS TO ALL VOLUNTEERS FOR MAKING 2004 A BIG SUCCESS
