CARE ABOUNDS AT THRIVENT FINANCIAL FOR LUTHERANS

Did you know:  During 2004 Thrivent Financial for Lutherans paid out over 341 million dollars in Care Abounds in Communities™ projects.  And you, the volunteers,  provided over 636 thousand man hours.  You can't help but feel proud to have a job that pays over $536.00 an hour for worthwhile projects.  No one gives back to their communities like Thrivent Financial for Lutherans.  With all our Thrivent Financial members taking part in 2005 the results can be even more tremendous.  Ask your congregational coordinators how you can help.  It's the best paying job anywhere.

For 2005 The Gulf Coast Chapter has been allocated  $23,949.00 for Care Abounds in Communities™ activities.  Several requests have already been approved to benefit Bokenkamp from LSSS,  Lutheran World Relief, Thanksgiving Food baskets for the needy, the American Cancer Society Relay in Kingsville, and funding for lap robes and quilts given to shut-ins and nursing home residents.  It really feels good to give, and nobody gives like Thrivent Financial for Lutheran members.

JOIN HANDS DAY ACTIVITY SET

Mark your calendar for June 4, 2005 for this years Clean the Beach Join Hands Day activity.  Last year congregations, pastors and youth from as far away as Floresville and San Antonio joined in the beach cleanup and food that followed.  Stay alert for more information as we expect this to become an annual activity. Last year 112 bags of trash was collected from the National Seashore.  The activity will start at 9:00 a.m. and conclude at noon with food and refreshments.  Join Hands Day is an event held annually by Fraternal Benefits Societies to join adults and youth in a worthwhile community activity.  There is about a 3 mile stretch of beach at the National Seashore, so it's time to get our youth and adults together for a morning of doing good for our community. Plan now to join us on June 4th.  Lutheran pastors and youth leaders will be receiving more information in the near future.  Those wishing to attend will need to register, just like last year.  Send a count of persons to attend from your congregation or group to Pat Dachenhause, phone 361 854-6067 (patricia4818@grandecom.net) or Leroy DeHaven, 361 993-8719 (lwdehaven@aol.com).  Registration deadline is May 15, 2005.

HUGS FROM HOUSTON
President Leroy DeHaven, Vice President Elaine Brundrett, and Communications Director Jim Bixler were in attendance at the Texas Region Kickoff event held the end of January in Clear Lake.  Each Chapter donated a door prize that represented their area.  A beautiful painting of Whooping Cranes was provided by Debbie Mladenka for the Gulf Coast Chapter to present as a door prize.  Debbie's beautiful work of art received "top billing" as one of the best door prizes at the meeting.  It was won by Fort Worth Chapter Leader, Diana Smith.  Congratulations to Diana for winning the number one door prize.  As for the HUGS....we all received HELP (H), a lot of URGING (U), some wonderful GUIDANCE (G), and plenty of SUPPORT (S).  We are very fortunate to have Dee Terry as Manager of our Lutheran Community Services, and Mary Jo Pfeiffer as our Lutheran Community Services Specialist.  Gerry Reid, who heads up Communications and Education, did an outstanding job at all the general sessions.  These folks keep chapter leaders motivated and on their toes.

NEW CHAPTER GUIDLINES TO BE STRICTLY ENFORCED
The following guidelines have been adopted by The Gulf Coast Chapter for Care Abounds in Communities™ fund raising projects this year.

1.  Requests for funding must be submitted to the chapter board for approval at least 6 weeks prior  to the event.  Incomplete requests will be returned. (Exceptions may be made for emergency requests).

2.  Events are to be properly promoted as a fund raiser with supplemental funds provided by Thrivent Financial for Lutherans.  Posters and bulletin inserts are available plus a Thrivent Financial banner for this use.

3.  A check for the amount requested must be included with the Report for Funding Advitity Results, with the check made payable to Gulf Coast Chapter, upon completion of the activity.  In return, the recipient, organization, etc. will receive a check for the amount requested plus the amount you sent with the RFAR. (Report for Funding Activity Results). Another report for receipts, funds raised and expenses is also required for all Care Programs.  If the recipient is a person or minor child a "Permission to Disclose Information" form is also required.

4.  All receipts, expenses, etc. will be sent to the chapter in an envelope that will hold the reporting paper work.  The old "reporting envelope" will NO LONGER be used.

5.  When all paper work is completed, including the check mentioned in #3 above, a check will then be presented from the local chapter that includes the amount requested plus the amount sent to the chapter.
Any incomplete forms will be returned.

6.  ALL FUNDS MUST BE USED FOR THE PURPOSE STATED IN THE REQUEST.  IF NOT FUNDS WILL BE WITHDRAWN.

7.  Chapter board members are available to present the check at a worship service or other appropriate place.

8.  Initial funding requests in excess of $800.00 will not be immediately available.  Amounts in excess of $800.00 may be available on December 1 provided chapter has left over funds at that time.

These new guidelines were explained at the Congregational Coordinator training session held at St. John in Robstown on March 5th.  Please contact a chapter leader should you desire more information.
