Linda DeHaven Replaces Pat Dachenhaus as Youth Director
We thank Pat Dachenhaus for her past service as Youth Director for the Gulf Coast Chapter of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans. Pat was instrumental in our 2004 and 2005 Join Hands Day activities at the National Seashore. In February Pat resigned her position, and was replaced by the chapter board with Linda DeHaven. Linda's assistance with the Join Hands Day at the beach has been instrumental in its success the last two years. She is no stranger to the chapter board as she is the wife of Leroy DeHaven our chapter president for 2003, 2004 and 2005. We appreciate Linda filling this position. (email: lwdehaven@aol.com) Note: The Gulf Coast Chapter still has a chapter leadership position open. The position of Community Service Team Director has yet to be filled. If you enjoy working with individual or groups that want to do something worth while for their community, and have three to 10 hours a month available for this service, please contact Diane Smith, Vice President, Gulf Coast Chapter of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans. The greatest service is that which we can render to others. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Register for Join Hands Day Beach Clean-up June 10th
Every year it gets bigger and better. The best part is that more trash is picked up at the National Seashore. The past two years youth and adults from San Antonio, Buda, Floresville, Rockport, Bishop, Corpus Christi and surrounding communities have shown up to volunteer their time to help clean up the beach, then enjoy hotdogs, softdrinks, etc., and be able to spend a few hours at the beach. This year the clean up has been set for Saturday, June,10 , 2006, beginning at 9:00 am. It's not too early to register your group. Contact Linda DeHaven at 361 993-8719 (or email to lwdehaven@aol.com) in order to have T-shirts, etc. on hand for participants. Contact Linda to register your group no later than May 12, 2006. A reminder and registration form will be sent to congregational coordinators in the near future. It is important to register so that all participants can receive a T-shirt and provide a number to be fed at the beach. Come one, come all!! The more the merrier. Congregational coordinators have already received packets in the mail from Thrivent Financial for Lutherans with all the details. Ask your coordinators about getting your group registered for this year's Join Hands Day. A follow up, second Join Hands Day activity is scheduled at the Food Bank on June 12th. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Does your Lutheran Congregation Have a Website??
Your congregation can have it's own website...and it's free...no cost...brought to you by lutheransonline.com. Go to the website: www.lutheransonline.com and discover how you can develop a website for your congregation. It is a great way to share what's going on at your church and community. There's probably a youngster in your congregation who would get a big kick out of being the Web Master for your church's website on the World Wide Web. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
GULF COAST CHAPTER RECEIVES 2005 CHAPTER OF EXCELLENCE AWARD
At the 2006 Congregational Coordinator training session at St. John in Robstown on February 18, 2006, the Gulf Coast Chapter was presented with Certificates of Excellence from Lutheran Community Service Team Manager Dee Terry and LCS Mary Jo Pfeiffer. In order to receive this award a chapter must meet 12 objectives spelled out in the criteria to qualify. It is the goal of the Gulf Coast Chapter to meet the criteria again in 2006. We must achieve all of the following: 1. At least 8 Chapter Board meetings. 2. At least two Join Hands Day events. 3. Hold a congregational coordinator training event. 4. Hold a congregational coordinator recognition event. 5. Conduct an annual chapter election by November 30, 2006. A chapter must also meet these action goals: 1. Utilize the budget allocated by Thrivent for Join Hands Day. 2. Allocate 100% of the Chapter's Care Abounds in Communities® funding. 3. Maintain a chapter website. 4. Mail four newsletters during the year. 5. Have at least one mailing to Congregational Coordinators. 6. Proof of media exposure. 7. Evidence of contact with elected officials, and five more. A special thanks to the 2005 Chapter Leaders and their efforts that made this award possible. Good job team. Let's keep up the good work. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
$45,000.00 Care In Congregations® Funds Available to Area Churches
Lutheran Congregations have at least $1,300.00 to claim in Care In Congregations funding through Thrivent Financial for Lutherans. Contact your congregation coordinator to apply for your funds. If you don't know who your coordinators are, please contact one of the chapter leaders. The money does not roll over to the next year, so Congregational Coordinators, make those requests, conduct the fund raiser, report it to Thrivent and receive the funds. To qualify, your congregation must have at least 3 congregational coordinators and 6 Thrivent households participate in the activity. These households do not necessarily need to belong to your congregation. Some of the larger congregations in the Gulf Coast Chapter have a large number of benefit and associate members that may be willing to assist. Contact the Chapter Leader named to assist your congregation if you are missing coordinators or the 6 required Thrivent households. See the list of Chapter Leaders assigned to congregations earlier in the newsletter.

Future Chapter Meeting Dates are Set
The Gulf Coast Chapter of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans has set dates for future board meetings. It may be early in the year, but request for Care Abounds In Communities® activities must be approved before you conduct the project. Submit request to any board member to present at any of these upcoming meetings in 2006: May 22, June 26, August 7, September 25, and November 6. The annual meeting will be held on November 11, 2006 at the Back Street Cafe in Sinton. You will receive a special registration form for the annual meeting, but put it on your calendar NOW! . Approved at the last board meeting was a community CPR training activity to be conducted at Mt. Olive. A great way to be CPR trained at little or no cost. Expect to hear more about this from Mt. Olive. Do some good in your community. Plan a project, request funding, conduct the activity, report the results and celebrate it. --------------------------------------------------------------------------

Think about this: Considering all the lint you get in your clothes dryer, if you kept drying your clothes would they eventually just disappear? Is it true that the only difference between a yard sale and a trash pickup is how close to the road the stuff is placed?
Does a clean house mean that there's a broken computer in it?
Is there ever a day that mattresses are not on sale?
Why is it that no plastic garbage bag will open from the end you first try?
In winter why do we try to keep the house as warm as it was in summer when we complained about the heat?
How come we never hear any father-in-law jokes?
If at first you don't succeed, shouldn't you try doing it like your wife told you in the first place?
