| JOIN HANDS DAY ACTIVITIES - SOME SWEAT, SOME FUN |
Joining Hands to Clean up Mariposa Park..... The Gulf Coast Chapter of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans hosted not one, but two Join Hands Day Activities this years. The most recent was the clean up at the National Seashore. In May we had lots of help in cleaning up Mariposa Park near downtown Corpus Christi. To see more on this activity go to our website at www.lutheransonline.com/gulfcoastchapter to see pictures, and learn more about this quiet part of town. Yes we did see butterflies during the clean up. ------------------------------------------ Joining Hands to Clean Beach..... Fifty-two participants joined hands on Saturday morning, June 14th, to clean up the Padre Island National Seashore. It was a bright sun that greeted Lutheran Church members, their youth and Gulf Coast Chapter Leaders in this annual effort to improve about three miles of seashore. Most trash was picked up where our fellow man had tread, leaving behind bottles and plastic substances. Afterwards all were treated to hot dogs, chips, soft drinks and cookies. To get a look at these workers and the beach go to the website at www.lutheransonline.com/gulfcoastchapter to see the pictures.
| Caring for Communities through Care Abounds in Communities® |
Through our first four months of 2008, the chapter board has approved 10 requests for funding. We started the year with $22,495, and have about $5,000.00 left for any future activities during 2008. Assistance has been given to Abiding Savior Lutheran in their annual Project Comfort project for Lutheran World Relief. To assist an individual, a barbecue fund raiser was held. One congregation will celebrate a Thanksgiving in June activity. We have approved funding for the annual Bokenkamp Fashion Show in October. Others have asked for assistance in their Community Table project, Christmas gifts for foster children and quilt making. In September, the board has made $1,600.00 available to Al Amin Shriners for a special drive to raise funds for the twenty-two Shriners Hospitals for Children. Shriners provide burn and orthopeadic care to children under the age of 18 at no charge. should you find a charitable organization needing supplemental funding for a worthy cause, or know of an individual that needs assistance, submit your funding request to the board for approval.

Look at what you helped do in 2007: Chapter Activities: $179,514 - From holding a community-wide auction to raise funds for a child with cancer, to building a handicap-accessible play area at a local park, our members make a difference every day through our chapter system. 84 Chapter activities were conducted by the Gulf Coast Chapter last year, resulting in 22,448 volunteer hours. Funds raised by these local teams totaled $121,984, which were combined with $57,530 from Thrivent Financial to multiply the good we can do together. In addition: Members in Texas also joined with Thrivent Financial to donate $17,269 to Habitat for Humanity and its affiliates. Thrivent Financial supported its many members who participated in a total of 100 Thrivent Builds Worldwide trips by providing $12,615 toward trip costs and $686,984 to help Habitat affiliates hosting the volunteers build additional homes.
Support from the Thrivent Financial for Lutherans Foundation: $188,974 - Thrivent Financial for Lutherans and its subsidiaries contribute to the Thrivent Financial for Lutherans Foundation, which awarded more than 11,500 grants totaling $22.8 million in 2007.
