SPECIAL SPEAKERS FOR VOTERS MEETING
Come and hear special presentations of how to be better prepared for disasters such as Katrina that might affect our area   Guest speakers have been contacted and have agreed to present information pertinent to us all.  A pastor who has survived Katrina to share first hand experiences as well.
Mark the date and time and place!!!  Sunday, October 9, from 3:00 to 7:00 pm at Faith Lutheran in Dickinson, 800 FM 517 Rd. E.




VOTERS NEEDED!!!
The Galveston County Thrivent Financial Chapter Voter’s meeting will be on Sunday, October 9, from 3:00 – 7:00, at Faith Lutheran in Dickinson, 800 FM 517 Rd E.  Of course, an evening meal will be served!! Please help us make this a successful event.   If you are interested in serving your community we entertain nominations from the floor for the ballot.    Come and let your voice be heard!!     See list of Board members at the end of this newsletter and RSVP to any one listed.




CANDIDATES FOR BOARD POSITONS
Positions which are required and for which candidates have been named are president, Paul Garrick from Peace Lutheran; Vice-President, Pattye Morton from Faith  Lutheran; Records Director, MaryAnn Waldon from Hope Lutheran; Financial Director, Sheryl Holland from Memorial Lutheran and Congregation Service Team Director, Sandra Devall from Faith Lutheran.  Others can be added for these positions.  Open are the positions Assistant Financial Director, Community Service Team Director, Youth Director, Events Director and Communications Director.    WE NEED PERSONS WILLING TO SERVE.


A brief biographical sketch of each of the candidates listed above is as follows:
Paul Garrett is a retired accountant with 34 years experience with BP.  He has been an active member of Peace Lutheran Church in Texas City for 20 years.  He services as the Chairman of the Board of Elders.   He is very active in Bible Study and in the Journey Bethlehem which Peace conducts each year at Christmas time for the community.  Paul is married to Dorothy and has three children,  Troy, Dean and Jennifer.  


Pattye Morton lives in Clear Lake with her husband of 15 years and their 10 yr. old daughter Julia. They attend Faith Lutheran Church Dickinson. Pattye, currently serves as the Youth Coordinator for the Galveston County Thrivent Chapter. She co-founded a unique Christmas gift program called "Teen TO Teen" that has been highly successful in providing holiday gifts to needy teenagers who reside in the greater Clear Lake area. She currently works as a hospice social worker with Regency Hospice in League City.


Dr. MaryAnn Waldon is retired after 39 years in the teaching field, 14 in Elementary School and 25 at Texas Southern University.  She is a lifetime Lutheran and has been a member of Hope Lutheran for 30 years.  She has served as president of two state organizations in Texas: The Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, Alpha State and the Texas Association for the Education of Young Children.    She is married and has five children , two step children and twelve grandchildren.    She serves as President of the Gulf Coast Zone of the Women's Missionary League, as Stephen Ministry Leader at Hope and the Prayer Circle Leader.  She is presently doing consultant work in education.



Sheryl Holland lives with her husband in Texas City and assists in operating their business, Texas Air Services in Dickinson.  They have two grown children.  Sheryl is a member of Memorial Lutheran in Texas City and served this past year to complete the term of Community Service Team Director.  Sheryl has also served as treasurer of the Women of ELCA, Texas – Louisiana Synod of the Gulf Coast and is currently vice-president of that group.



Sandra Devall is a life time Lutheran, native Houstonian and retired school teacher.  She is a member of Faith Lutheran in Dickinson where she serves on the council for Evangelism, serves as the Sunday School Curriculum Coordinator, and the new member coordinator.  She and Bill, her husband, have six grown children, ten grandchildren and one great grandchild.  She has a passion for single parent families and spends her volunteer time in the community towards that effort.  She is a master gardener and for quiet time she reads, water colors and hugs her grandchildren.




FUND RAISER FOR PASTORS AND CHURCHES
A SPECIAL fund raising effort will be part of the Galveston County Thrivent Financial Chapter meeting.  This special donation will be for churches and pastors of the Katrina stricken area of both the Texas-Louisiana Gulf Coast Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America and the Southern District of the Missouri Synod Lutheran Church.


Your help is needed in getting out the message of this fund raising effort.  Your support is needed as well.







WANTED – TALENTS AND WILLING SERVICE
The positions of  Assistant Financial Director, Community Service Team Director, Youth Director, Events Director and Communications Director have no nominees for the Galveston County Board of Directors.  Do you have an interest??  Do you have a desire to serve?  Do you have a talent that is not being used?  Description of the positions listed above are available if you are interested.  Also you may bring a new perspective to the board.

OKTOBERFEST BY THE BAY
OKtoberfest by the Bay!  Mark your calendars!  A good time will be had by all at the Memorial Lutheran Church in Texas City,Texas on October 8, 2005.  Events include live music, games great food, crafts.  Of course, the best part of it all is the fellowship.  The festivities will be from 11:00 A. M. TO 6:00 P.M. at cross streets, 4th Street and Palmer Avenue.  This is a Care in Congregation® Project to supplement  funds for the rebuilding of the church building which burned.








ALL TWELVE CONGREGATIONS USING CARE IN CONGREGATION FUNDS
Each of the congregations in Galveston County who are a part of the Galveston County Chapter of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans are utilizing Care in Congregations Funds.  The Board of Directors commends each Congregation for utilizing funds and providing service to their church.  Congregations that have already completed projects are: Faith Lutheran in Dickinson, First Lutheran in Galveston, Hope Lutheran in Friendswood, Memorial Lutheran in Texas City, St. John’s Lutheran in Santa Fe, St. John’s Lutheran in Galveston, St. Paul’s Lutheran in Galveston, Trinity Lutheran in LaMarque, and
Zion Lutheran in Galveston.  


Congregations still completing projects are Christus Victor Lutheran in League City,  Lakeside Lutheran in League City and Peace Lutheran in Texas City.  Each congregation receives funds which can be used at the discretion of the church under the direction of the three Congregation Coordinators  for their church.  The amount received by each congregation is dependent upon the number of baptized members in their congregation.
