| YOUR 2006 BOARD OF DIRECTORS |
Six directors for the Galveston County Board of Directors were elected on October 9, 2005 at the Election meeting held at Faith Lutheran Church in Dickinson. These directors are listed below with positions and short biographical sketches for your convenience. Still vacant are the positions of Community Service Team Director, Youth Director, Events Director and Communications Director. If you are interested in serving please contact, President, Paul Garrett at fourjs@hal-pc.org or Records Director, MaryAnn Waldon at mbwaldon@earthlink.net President: Paul Garrett is a retired accountant with 34 years experience with BP. He has been an active member of Peace Lutheran Church in Texas City for 20 years. He service as the Chairman of the Board of Elders. He is very active in Bible Study and in the Journey Bethlehem which Peace conducts each year at Christmas time for the community. Paul is married to Dorothy and has three children, Troy, Dean and Jennifer. Vice-President: Pattye Morton lives in Clear Lake with her husband of 15 years and their 10 yr. old daughter Julia. They attend Faith Lutheran Church Dickinson. Pattye, currently serves as the Youth Coordinator for the Galveston County Thrivent Chapter. She co-founded a unique Christmas gift program called "Teen TO Teen" that has been highly successful in providing holiday gifts to needy teenagers who reside in the greater Clear Lake area. She currently works as a hospice social worker with Regency Hospice in League City.
Records Director: Dr. MaryAnn Waldon is retired after 39 years in the teaching field, 14 in Elementary School and 25 at Texas Southern University. She is a lifetime Lutheran and has been a member of Hope Lutheran for 30 years. She has served as president of two state organizations in Texas: The Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, Alpha State and the Texas Association for the Education of Young Children. She is married and has five children , two step children and twelve grandchildren. She serves as President of the Zone of the Lutheran Women’s Missionary League, as Stephen Ministry Leader at Hope and the Prayer Circle Leader. She is presently doing consultant work in education.
Treasurer: Sheryl Holland lives with her husband in Texas City and assists in operating their business, Texas Air Services in Dickinson. They have two grown children. Sheryl is a member of Memorial Lutheran in Texas City and served this past year to complete the term of Community Service Team Director. Sheryl has also served as treasurer of the Women of ELCA, Texas – Louisiana Synod of the Gulf Coast and is currently vice-president of that group.
Congregation Service Team Director: Sandra Devall is a life time Lutheran, native Houstonian and retired school teacher. She is a member of Faith Lutheran in Dickinson where she serves on the council for Evangelism, serves as the Sunday School Curriculum Coordinator, and the new member coordinator. She and Bill, her husband, have six grown children, ten grandchildren and one great grandchild. She has a passion for single parent families and spends her volunteer time in the community towards that effort. She is a master gardener and for quiet time she reads, water colors and hugs her grandchildren.
Assistant Financial Director: Reagan Mayville is a member of Peace Lutheran in Texas City who serves in a special Christmas project, “Journey to Bethlehem.” She is married to Don and has one son, James. She has served as the Congregation Coordinator for Peace and she works for a phone company in Houston.

Hope Silent Auction to support The Point of Light Clinic Hope Live Auction to benefit The Bridge Over Troubled Waters Hope Barbeque to benefit Interfaith Caring Ministries Hope Craft Fair to support Christian Helping Hands Teen to Teen Christmas to benefit need youth First Loving Hands Sewing Group to provide quilts, pillows and infant clothing St. John’s Service to Seniors for Edgewater Retirement Special Care Unit. St John’s Service to Seniors # 2 for Gulf Care Health Center Some money is still available for the Care Abounds In Communities® Activities for 2006. For approval of a project in support of a community group bring the completed application for the project to the next Board of Directors meeting on Thursday, April 20, 7:00 P. M. at Peace Lutheran Church in Texas City. | FIRST CARE ABOUNDS IN COMMUNITY PROJECT FOR 2006 A GREAT SUCCESS |
The Memorial Game Day for the Texas City Learning Place on March 11 was a huge success with 600 people attending and raising approximately $20,000. Mike Lund, mayor pro-tem of Texas City and Gean Leonard, sheriff of Galveston County and Judge Barwell were also in attendance. | CARE IN CONGREGATION® FUNDS |
As a member did you know that each of the twelve churches in the Galveston County Chapter have funds allocated for the projects within their own church? If you know of a special need in your own church speak to your Congregation Coordinator. Each church has three Congregation Coordinators who apply for these funds through Thrivent Financial for Lutherans. Thrivent encourages participation of all members at the church and chapter level. Let your voice be heard. The churches in the Galveston County Chapter of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans are Christus Victor Lutheran in League City, Faith Lutheran in Dickinson, First Lutheran in Galveston, Hope Lutheran in Friendswood, Lakeside Lutheran in League City, Memorial Lutheran in Texas City, Peace Lutheran in Texas City, St. John’s Lutheran in Santa Fe, St. John’s Lutheran in Galveston, St. Paul’s Lutheran in Galveston, Trinity Lutheran in LaMarque, and Zion Lutheran in Galveston. The amount received by each congregation is dependent upon the number of baptized members in their congregation.
| YARD SALE AS CARE IN CONGREGATION ACTIVITY |
Memorial Lutheran Church is planning a yard sale on May 4, 5 and 6 of 2006. This is their first Care in Congregation project of the year. The profits from the yard sale this year will go to the building fund. Memorial is refurbishing a new building following the destruction of their previous building due to fire. Why not come out and support this effort?
| TWO JOIN HANDS DAY PROJECTS ARE BEING PLANNED FOR 2006 |
On May 6, Galveston County Chapter will be supporting two projects for the Join Hands Day effort. The first project will be the landscaping at two different Habitat for Humanity homes. The second project will be an activity supporting the Crisis Pregnancy Center in Texas City. Come to the Galveston County Chapter Director’s Meeting on April 20 to find out how you can participate and support these activities.
| ELECTION FOR 2006 WILL HAVE NEW LOOK |
Remember the fun you have at Ice Cream Socials? This year the Galveston County Chapter is going to hold the election as a social event with ice cream and hot dogs being served for the entire family. You can come to vote, meet and greet friends an enjoy that great ice cream and hot dogs all the same time. Save the date of Sunday, October 22 from 2:00 to 4:00 P.M. for this event. It won’t be complete without you. Mark the date on your calendar now.

Because publicity is vital to the success of any activity. The Galveston County Chapter of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans is purchasing two banners for use by the twelve members churches for any of the Care Abounds in Communities or Care in Congregation Projects. Please contact any member of the Board of Directors or come to the meetings which are planned for remainder of 2006 on the third Thursday evening of the month at 7:00 P. M. The next meeting will be on April 20, 2006 at Peace Lutheran in Texas City at 7:00 P. M. Each of the meetings will be at the same time and location unless Congregation Coordinators are notified otherwise.
