NEW CHAPTER LEADERS FOR 2007

At the Election meeting in October, three new leaders were elected and three leaders were re-elected who are continuing on the board.


The newly elected President is Pattye Morton who served previously as vice president. :  Pattye Morton lives in Clear Lake with her husband of 16 years and their 11 yr. old daughter Julia. They attend Faith Lutheran Church Dickinson.  Pattye also served previously as Youth Coordinator.  She co-founded a unique Christmas gift program called "Teen TO Teen" that has been highly successful in providing holiday gifts to needy teenagers who reside in the greater Clear Lake area. She currently works as a hospice social worker with Regency Hospice in League City.


The newly elected  Vice-President is Ruby Reviere, a member of Christus Victor Lutheran Church.  Ruby has been a resident of Friendswood since 1970.  She has four adult children, two of whom live outside the United States.    She loves to travel and has been to 32 countries.   She is presently the president of the Friendship  Force of Houston, an international exchange organization whose major goal is to make friends around the  world.  She is retired but previously worked in Texas City and Goose Creek Food Service.    


Newly elected as Records Director is Claudean Smith.  Claudean has been a Missouri Synod Lutheran for 50 years and is a member of St. John’s Lutheran in Galveston where she is church treasurer.  She also has served as the president of the Ladies Aid Society and the treasurer of the Gulf Coast Zone of the Lutheran Women’s Missionary League.  She has served as Congregational Coordinator for Thrivent since the beginning of Thrivent and held offices in Aid Association for Lutherans.  Claudean and her soldier husband are retired from the U. S. Army after 28 years in the service traveling in the United States and abroad.  They have six children five of which are adopted.  They have lived in Galveston since 1983.


Re-elected as the Financial Director is Sheryl Holland. Sheryl Holland lives with her husband in Texas City and assists in operating their business, Texas Air Services in Dickinson.  They have two grown children.  Sheryl is a member of Memorial Lutheran in Texas City and served this past year to complete the term of Community Service Team Director.  Sheryl has also served as treasurer of the Women of ELCA, Texas – Louisiana Synod of the Gulf Coast and is currently vice-president of that group.


Also re-elected to the board is Sandra Devall who serves as the Congregational Service Team Director:  Sandra Devall is a life time Lutheran, native Houstonian and retired school teacher.  She is a member of Faith Lutheran in Dickinson where she serves on the council for Evangelism, serves as the Sunday School Curriculum Coordinator, and the new member coordinator.  She and Bill, her husband, have six grown children, ten grandchildren and one great grandchild.  She has a passion for single parent families and spends her volunteer time in the community towards that effort.  She is a master gardener and for quiet time she reads, water colors and hugs her grandchildren.






Newly elected to the board is Richard Thiem who will serve as Assistant Financial Director.   Richard is a life time member of First Lutheran Church in Galveston.  He holds a Bachelors degree with a major in accounting from Lamar University.  He retired in 2004 after 42 years in data processing working primarily in financial systems such as general ledger, financial reporting and investments.  He has served as treasurer of First Lutheran Church from 1999.- 2005.  He served previously as president,  vice-president,  and treasurer of Aid Association for Lutherans.  He is currently the treasurer and trustee for the First Lutheran Endowment Fund and Co-Financial Director and Trustee on the New Century Fund that oversees the capital improvements of the church.






CONGRATULATIONS TO CONGREGATION COORDINATORS

Each of the twelve churches in the Galveston County Chapter have requested the full allocations of Congregation Funds.  The Congregational Coordinators are to be commended for the effort to utilize the Thrivent funds specifically given to their church. Churches in the Galveston County chapter include:  Christus Victor in League City, Faith Lutheran in Dickinson, First Lutheran in Galveston, Hope Lutheran in Friendswood, Lakeside Lutheran in League City, Memorial Lutheran in Texas City, Peace Lutheran in Texas City, St. John Lutheran in Santa Fe, St John Lutheran in Galveston, St. Paul Lutheran in Galveston, Trinity Lutheran in La Marque and Zion Lutheran in Galveston.





CONGREGATION COORDINATOR CHANGES ??

If it is necessary to name any new Congregational Coordinators for a church in the chapter, names and Thrivent numbers should be reported to a member of the Galveston County Chapter Board.  There must be three coordinators for each congregation.  Coordinators are approved by the board and also submitted to the Thrivent home office.  Please notify the chapter board if there are changes.




CARE ABOUNDS IN COMMUNITIES® FUNDS UTILIZED IN 2006

Many community agencies were assisted through the Galveston County Chapter of Thrivent Financial Care Abounds in Communities Funds.  Included in support were a number of groups and an individual with health needs.  Among the groups assisted were Samaritan Center for Special Needs, Leukemia  and Lymphoma Society,  World Relief, Texas City Citizens Police Academy Association Alumni, Women’s Resource and Crisis Center, Women’s Pregnancy Center, Luther Hill Ministries, HRA Village, Texas City
Learning Center, Edgewater Retirement Community (Special Care Unit), Family Out Reach, Bridge Over Troubled Waters, Point of Light Clinic, Christian Helping Hands, Interfaith Caring Ministries, Sea Farer’s Center,  St. Vincent’s House,  mission grant support, WTMB heart patients and disadvantaged teens in the area.


A number of Thrivent members contributed  many hours of volunteer work through different projects to raise the funds that were supplemented by Thrivent Financial.  Some of the projects included a game night, baked potato sale, bake sales, luncheons, making heart pillows, soccer games sales, garage sales, live auction, silent auction, craft fair, clothing bag sale, barbeque sales, shopping for and with teens, wrapping party, party for special needs adults, sewing pillows for heart patients and making quilts,


The above information may stimulate groups with ideas for ways to serve the community in 2007.  Begin your plans and set goals for who to serve and make next year as productive and rewarding as 2006.  Be prepared to come to the chapter board with your requests early in 2007.
