Congregation Coordinator/ Pastor Appreciation Dinner
An appreciation dinner for Congregational Coordinators is a yearly event for the Galveston County Chapter.  This year the event will be at a new location and include the senior pastors of the churches in the chapter.
The event will be held at Claudio’s Restaurant and Piano Bar, 700 Kipp Ave. located in Kemah on Thursday evening, November 15.   The evening will include dinner and door prizes followed by entertainment by Johnny Felder.  This special dinner is a big “Thank You” for the outstanding efforts of Coordinators and Pastors at each of the twelve churches in the chapter.

Use Care in Congregation Funds Before End of December
Congregations each receive allocated funds for use in their church according to the number of members in the Congregation who are Thrivent members.    At this printing six churches have requested and completed projects using their funds; Peace Lutheran in Texas City,  St. John’s Lutheran in Galveston, St. John’s Lutheran in Santa Fe, St. Paul’s in Galveston, Trinity and Zion.    Four churches have requested the approval of projects for the last part of the funds and are working on completion.  Two churches have yet to request, have approved and complete projects for the use of the funds.  Monies from Thrivent are such a wonderful supplement to a church.  Each church is urged to use and continue to use these funds.

Three Congregational Coordinators For Each Church.
To assist in allocating and requesting the Care in Congregation Funds, each church is required to select three Congregational Coordinators.  Names are submitted to the Galveston County Chapter Board for approval.  Please go the Thrivent website at www.thrivent.com to deterimine if your church has the required number of Congregational Coordinators.  If not please urge, your lead Congregational Coordinator, to address this deficiency.  To be sure to receive 2008 funds for your church, three should be designated.

Quilting at Christus Victor
A great group of 15 to 20 quilters at Christus Victor meet once a month from 3 to 8 p.m.  This allows people who work to come after work and help.    Those who can, stay for  the entire five hours.    Not only do they quilt but they also eat.   Two members of Christus Victor,, Sylvia and Bob Coursen prepare a wonderful chef style dinner each time the group meets.  Bob loves to cook and is the chief provider while  Sylvia does the desserts.  This has been a big drawing card for the meetings.  In July and September ten quilts have been made.  Normally four to six quilts  are made in 4 hours of work time.  Through a grant from Thrivent from Care Abounds in Communities Funds, materials have been purchased for this worthy project of producing quilts for World Relief.

How to Help Your Congregation
Did you know that Thrivent Financial for Lutherans has a program called Care in Congregations® where funding is provided to Thrivent Financial members to conduct fund-raising and/or hands-on service activities to benefit your congregation or its related Lutheran institutions? In fact, Thrivent Financial members are encouraged to use the funds to help the congregation in its ministry to the community.

If you see a need in your congregation that could be helped through this funding, please contact a Thrivent Financial congregational coordinator in your congregation. If you don't know who your three congregational coordinators are, please contact a member of our chapter leadership board as noted in this newsletter, and he/she will help you get in touch with a coordinator.
