COOKIE JAR JOY FUND RAISER
Fourteen 3rd - 5th graders (SWAT- Servants Worshipping All Together) and 8 adult advisers at Hope Lutheran Church in Friendswood spent a Friday evening making jars filled with cookie mixes.  The cookie mixes were sold to members of the congregation.  This activity has become an annual event at Hope.  100% of the profits from these sales along with supplemental funds from Thrivent are used to  purchase Christmas gifts for less fortunate children from the community.  The children, along with their adult advisers, spent an afternoon at one of the local department stores purchasing gifts.  The children learn to shop wisely, purchasing as many gifts as they can with their funds.  They also learn to appreciate the plentifulness in their own lives and the joy of giving to and sharing with others.

Wrapping Party for Seafarer’s Center
Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America (W.E.L.C.A.) of St. John's Lutheran Church of Santa Fe held a wrapping party in December. The youth assisted in filling and wrapping 50 shoe boxes for the Seafarers  Center in Galveston Texas .  Thrivent  assisted with Care Abounds in Communities funds helping make this project possible.

Care Abounds in Communities Funds Utilized For Twenty Two Projects
The year 2007 was a productive year for projects funded with Care Abounds in Communities funds from Thrivent.  Twenty two different projects were supported.   All of the $16,470 allocated to the Galveston Chapter was utilized, and all but one project has been completed at the time of this writing.  Types of projects funded this year include a Cajun Festival, several luncheons, a game night, an estate sale, garage sales, quilting, silent and live auctions, several luncheons and dinners, service to seniors, a Katrina recovery construction project, craft fairs, brown bag sales, and making of heart quilts.

Many different non-profit groups were supported by these different projects in 2007.    All that is needed to support a non profit group and utilize these funds is organizing a team, developing a plan from an idea such as the ones listed above, and then submitting a request to the Galveston County Chapter Board in 2008.  Make a difference in your community for 2008!  Submit a request!!

Congratulations! Ten Congregations Use Church Funds
Of the twelve congregations in the Galveston County Chapter, ten have utilized funds for various projects  to assist their church.  Some of the activities include youth garage sale, cookie jar sale, yard sale, Oktoberfest, square dance, bake sale and bakeless bake sale, spaghetti dinner, spring fling, barbeque, rummage sale, dinner for new tiles, remodeling rest rooms and improving the sound system.

Each congregation receives funds according to the number of members within the church.  The least amount received is $1300.  All your church needs to do to receive the funds from Thrivent for your church is plan a project to raise funds or  do a hands-on service activity (work project) and apply directly to Thrivent through the Congregation Coordinator.   Funds may be utilized for any need or group within the church.  All congregations are encouraged to apply and  use  their allocated funds.  No unused funds may be carried over into the next year (2008) if not used in 2007.
