Fort Bend-Wharton County Chapter, Chapter Chatter
We have scheduled our annual all member chapter dinner meeting for Sunday December 2nd in Danevang, Texas. Danevang is a short and pleasant drive about 10 miles south of El Campo. Take 71 south from Highway 59, turn left at FM 426 and there you are. Our activities will be centered around the Danevang Lutheran Church, Community hall and Danish Museum. Beginning at 4:00 pm we will have access to the community museum for browsing. If you have not seen this gem of coastal Texas Danish culture you will be impressed. At 6:00 pm we will gather in the community hall for our dinner meeting beginning with an appetizer of fried alligator and a brief program by the Janicks on their alligator business. The main course will be a traditional gulf coast shrimp boil cooked by Ann and Doyle Scherer. Following the meal Pastor Laird, of the Danevang Church, and his wife Winnie will provide some danish style entertainment in the Hans Christian Anderson mode. We will conclude the evening with recognition of chapter volunteers and some door prizes. You don't want to miss this one. Please RSVP to Jerry Lohr at J_S_Lohr@Hughes.net or 979-387-2329 by November 26th.
Care in Congregations Projects
We are making good progress toward our goal to spend all the congregational allocated funds in 2007. Seventeen churches have completed projects. The remaining four congregations have until December 20th to seek approval for a project. All projects need to be reported by December 31st of 2007. Our chapter goal is to spend all of the allocated funds. Supplemental funds are a terrible thing to waste.
Care Abounds in Communities Projects
The chapter has allocated all of it's Care Abounds in Communities supplemental funds this year. Not all the results are in but it appears that we made our money go a long way through multiplication. I will have the details at the chapter dinner in December. Good job volunteers.
We look forward to another good year in 2008. We have one Care Abounds in Communities activity already planned for. We plan to build a family waiting area at the LSS Krause Youth Center in Katy that will be dedicated to the memory of our Past President Ben Powell. Ben had a real heart for youth and the families being helped through the good folks at Krause. We already have $3000 promised to the project. The waiting area is still in the planning stages but it will take considerable funds for contractor work and a lot of volunteer hours. More information to come soon. Our chapter has been approved for a fall 2008 Thrivent Builds / Habitat for Humanity build in Rosenberg on Habitat Way. We already have $2100 raised toward our goal of $7500 chapter support through the efforts of Peace Lutheran in Rosenberg. A chicken fried steak drive through dinner and direct solicitation at local retail stores generated the funds. We will need a lot of volunteer hours for the build but I am convinced that we can do it based on the outstanding response to our 2007 build. This will be our fourth successful chapter sponsored Thrivent Builds Habitat for Humanity build.
