Thrivent Builds with Habitat for Humanity - Fort Bend

*Thrivent Financial has committed $125 million over four years to help Habitat for Humanity to build hundreds of additional homes in the United States each year. In 2006 and 2007 more than 650 homes were constructed with 325 Habitat for Humanity affiliates. Thirty of those homes have been in Texas and 10 more will be constructed in 2008.

* Thrivent members and area Lutherans are helping a family build a home on Habitat Way in Rosenberg with Fort Bend Habitat for Humanity.

* Construction on our chapter project begins with a framing blitz starting on Saturday September 6th and continuing through October 28th 2008 on successive Saturdays.

* Through the Thrivent Builds with Habitat program:
  - 65% of the construction costs are provided by Thrivent
  - 25% is provided by the local Habitat affiliate.
  - 10% of construction expenses are provided by our chapter and area Lutheran Churches. For the Rosenberg home, the 10% goal is $7,565. We have $3713 in hand toward that goal with pledges of an additional $2600. Fishers of Men Lutheran and Peace Lutheran are leading the fundraising effort with their projects.

* The volunteer goal is for 50% of the on-site workers to be Lutherans. Church members are encouraged to invite friends, neighbors, and co-workers etc. to work on the house and fill the remaining volunteer slots.

* Congregational Champions are needed for each church to provide leadership and information at the congregation level for Thrivent Builds.  These individuals work with chapter leaders to recruit various types of volunteers and plan a simple fundraiser. Jerry Lohr on the chapter leadership team is serving as the Thrivent Builds Habitat Specialist and can be contacted at 979-387-2329 and J_S_LOHR@Hughes.net. He works with the congregational Champions and other volunteers to see that the project meets fundraising and volunteer goals.

* Here are some ways for church members to participate.
  - Construction- no experience required (must be at least 16)
  - Site host- Greet volunteers at the site, help sign them in, distribute water and help with lunch.
  - Lunch team- Bring and serve lunch for 25-30 volunteers
  - Landscaping- Help lay sod, plant trees, scrubs and flowers.
  - Dedication-Organize event, refreshments, music, house warming items for the family
  - Contribute funds
  - Pray for the work team and the family receiving the home

Congregational Coordinator Training

Our Congregational Service Team Director, Sean Gutierrez is conducting a training session for new and established coordinators. The training session will be held at The Lodge on Lake Lohr in Beasley on Saturday May 3rd from 11:00 am until 2:00 pm. Lunch will be provided. Sean has developed an excellent presentation using a PC to walk through all the Thrivent website programs relevant to coordinators. Details of the website processes will be worked through step by step to ensure understanding. In addition, Sean will provide a CD tutorial for take home, plus hard copy materials describing the congregational coordinator function. Coordinators will be contacted by Sean via a newsletter and asked to sign up. Active and knowledgeable coordinators are critical to access of Thrivent’s resources by congregations.

Fund raising efforts have begun to support a $15,000 project at The Krause Center in Katy. The project involves the creation of an outdoor visiting area at the entrance to the center, so that families of residents have a comfortable and pleasant place to wait and visit. Ben Powell is a past president of our Thrivent chapter and was a tireless volunteer for the Krause Center. This is a fitting memorial to him in recognition of his years of service. A plan has been developed by the contractor which provides for five benches, three high walled planters suitable for peripheral seating, and a central fountain.  To date, $3900 has been raised with an additional $1600 in supplemental funds to be provided by the chapter.
