Annual Chapter Leader Meeting
Thrivent Financial Chapter Leaders, Thrivent Financial Representatives and regional leaders met at the Hilton on the U of H Campus February 21 team building, equipping, training and recognizing accomplishments in 2008. We were excited to have Ray Lehrmann our Communications Director in 2008 receive a Volunteer of Excellence Award for his work in the Fort Bend community. Ray was selected from a field of several hundred potential candidates in the Gulf Coast area. Thrivent awarded Ray a check for $250 for him to give to a charity of choice. On May 14th he handed the check to Nancy Brown, executive director of the Rosenberg-Richmond Helping Hands Ministry. Our Fort Bend-Wharton Chapter received the Chapter of Excellence Award for the third year in a row. The annual award is given to chapters that accomplish fifteen of eighteen goals set by the region. These goals designed to gauge how effective the chapter is in serving the community.
Among those goals are: construction of a Habitat For Humanity home in Rosenberg through the Thrivent Builds program, and raising more than three times the matching funds allocated for the chapter. We were allocated $23,855 in matching funds while we raised $111.030. · Eleven articles and photos were published in local newspapers highlighting the chapter’s activities. · Congregations spent nearly all of their Care in Congregations matching funds while raising nearly twice as much in the churches and the community. · We successfully submitted a candidate for Volunteer of the Year.
Care in Congregations Projects
Each of the twenty-one churches in our chapter are allocated matching funds available for fund-raising projects of their choice. For the first half of 2009, ten churches have completed eleven projects raising a total of $24,550. The fund-raising events were attended by 2209 people of whom 192 were Thrivent members. In total, 1212 volunteer hours were spent in support of the Care in Congregation projects. Each congregation needs to have a minimum of three designated Thrivent Congregational Coordinators. One of those coordinators is designated lead coordinator and must have computer online access to conduct business and lead activities. If a congregation does not have three coordinators they will not be able to get Care in Congregations funds for projects. Thrivent lists the following congregations as having less than three coordinators: St. Martin, Trinity, St. John, Living Word and Hope. Please contact Sean Gutierrez our Congregation Service Team Coordinator at 281-341-6630 for assistance, or call any other chapter leader.

Care in Communities Projects are approved by the chapter leadership in contrast to the Care in Congregations projects which are approved by congregation coordinators.
Thrivent Builds Fort Bend County
A chapter sponsored Habitat For Humanity home is scheduled for start-up in early September at 10th and Preston in Richmond. We have about 70% of our $7500 sponsorship commitment already in hand. Churches such as Peace Lutheran in Rosenberg have been very successful in raising funds through a variety of means. This year we need ten chapter churches to supply volunteer builders, site hosts and food. Eight Lutheran Churches in Fort Bend County did an excellent job supporting specific Saturday build days in 2008 but we need two more since the schedule of the build-out is often extended due to weather or material problems. Sue Lohr, our Chapter Thrivent Builds Specialist for 2009, is coordinating the effort.
