Chapter Sponsored Thrivent Builds/Habitat For Humanity Home Start
Our chapter is sponsoring a Habitat For Humanity home in Richmond, Texas in conjunction with The Thrivent Builds program of Thrivent Financial For Lutherans and Fort Bend Counrty Habitat For Humanity.
Before I ask for your help again for another Habitat/Thrivent Builds project I want to thank you for your support of the 2008 build in Rosenberg. Over the duration of the build you provided help and encouragement including  253 person days of labor. I was awed at the faithfulness of those who showed up on very hot days to work so hard. I want to specifically acknowledge the following churches for their participation.

Fishers of Men Lutheran – 78 volunteers days
Trinity Rosenberg- 41
St. Martins – 20
Faith Lutheran Sugar land - 7
St. Paul – 28
New Covenant – 9
Peace Lutheran – 36
Living Word -  33
In addition to these local Lutheran volunteers, 100 more individual showed up to help. Wow!!

The home we will build will be in Richmond in 2009 will be located at the corner of 10th and Preston. The new homeowners who will be working along side of us are Heather and “Pink” Turner. The Turners and their two children Haven 10 and Thad 8 are currently living in a one bedroom home with no central heat and only one window AC unit. What they do have is hot and cord running sewage that backs up in the yard. They need help. “Pink” is on disability but has been an active volunteer at Fort Bend Habitat’s resale center in Stafford and will be assisting in construction of his home as he is able. Heather is employed by Texana.
We also need help for our 2009 Thrivent Builds project in the form of volunteers, lunch sponsors, cash donations and donation in kind. Volunteers need to be recruited for each build day but anyone is welcome to show up for work on any day. This year the volunteers need to be 16 years of age or older. We encourage our chapter churches to choose a day bring their volunteers and provide lunch for them. Peace Lutheran Rosenberg has taken the lead and volunteered for the first day of the build, September 12th. Trinity Lutheran will site host on October 3rd, St. Paul, Rosenberg on the 17th, Faith/St. Philip on the 24th and Living Word on the 7th of November.
Other churches sponsoring a day in previous years are, New Covenant, St Martin and Fishers of Men Lutheran.
Funds are also needed to support this project as we need about $7565 for the chapter’s share. To date we have raised $4872. Peace Lutheran has already held one fundraiser gathering in over $1000 and is planning another on September 20th, a drive through chicken fried steak dinner.
There are options for gifts in kind to help with the build. Construction related materials and landscaping supplies can be accepted after review of the material by Ft. Bend Habitat personnel for its appropriateness.
The home will be located in old Richmond at the corner of 10th and Preston. Site clearance and leveling has been completed and we are on schedule for the Saturday September 12th start date. This year the minimum age for youth is 16 years during constriction to keep up with OSHA regulations. During the landscaping phase after the home is completed, youth as young as 12 may help with the proper supervision.

Habitat Home Site Hosting Duties
Churches willing and able to host a Saturday build date for provision of food and volunteers have followed the following guidlines from previous years.
The Thrivent Builds Congregation Champion will coordinate the volunteers and food services for your designated build day. The Champion may and should delegate responsibilities and tasks for the church team. Please keep the Thrivent Builds Chapter Specialist Jerry Lohr at, 979-387-2329 or J_S_Lohr@Hughes.net, aware of your hosting plans and progress. The following categories of tasks will be completed for each build day.

1) The Champion will inform Jerry of the volunteer signup count one week before the build day. Jerry needs to report this number to Fort Bend Habitat for Humanity so that additional volunteers can be recruited or drawn from the other home concurrently being built.
2) The host person signing in volunteers should arrive at the site by 7:30 am. A table and a three ring binder with signup sheets will be provided. Please insure that all relevant data for each volunteer is collected and appropriate waivers are signed.
3) Host team members setting up the signup and food services station should arrive at 7:30 am also. The following items will be available from onsite Habitat storage.
- Canopy and banner
- Folding chairs
- Water and sports drinks
- Snack and energy bars
- Hand sanitizer, paper towels and wipes
- Trash bags
- Latex gloves for food servers
- Cups, plates, bowls, utensils
-               Coolers for ice (Hosts will need to bring ice, fruit, and Lunch food for the day.)
4) Workers should arrive at 7:45 am. Work begins at 8:15 am following a welcome, a safety briefing and assignment to work teams based on skills and interest. Each day we will try to have work completed by 4:00 pm including site cleanup duties. Volunteers may work a full or half day but they should designate their preference when they sign up.
5) Snacks and drinks will be made available both morning and afternoon. Congregations may want to supplement with fresh fruit and pastries as they choose.
6) Lunch is served between 11:30 am and 11:45 am. The host team will let the construction supervisor know when they are ready to serve. Meals can be simple but they should be nourishing and substantial. A lot of calories will be needed that day. Plan for the maximum number of workers noted on the build schedule for your particular build day.
7) All equipment and unused nonperishable food items will be stored on site at the end of the day.

Have a lot of fun!!!

Chapter Sponsored Thrivent Ecomomic and Financial Update Events
This year, Thrivent Financial for Lutherans has made resources available to conduct a wide variety of financial education events. To date we have completed two events and have scheduled an additional  two. The presenters in each educational event are seasoned senior people in the Thrivent organization. Our chapter has made funds available to each of the churches sponsoring an event to provide a meal or refreshments. The following four events have been scheduled:

St. Paul Wharton hosted an economic update on Sunday August 16th and Living Word Katy had a presentation on Monday the 17th.
Trinity Lutheran in Rosenberg is sponsoring and economic update and pizza dinner on September 10th at 6:00pm at the church at 7th and Louise Streets.
St. Martin on Burney Road in Sugar land is hosting an economic update on October 20 the at 7:00pm.

These are difficult times financially so we encourage you to be informed and to ask questions.

El Salvador Mission Trip- Thrivent Builds
Thrivent Financial Representative Suzanne Kocurek will be leading a group to going El Salvador to continue work on a multi building project sponsored by Thrivent Builds. While the United States is in the midst of a housing crisis, the people of El Salvador have another kind of housing crisis that has been going on for more than a decade. Repeated natural disasters, poverty and a shortage of land have lead to a deficit of 400,000 homes. Thrivent Financial for Lutherans in conjunction with Habitat for Humanity International has committed $1.25 million over four years to build homes in the U.S. and around the world. As a part of the Thrivent Builds program, Thrivent members, Lutherans and other volunteers will build 75 homes in El Salvador alongside the gracious, hardworking people there who need simple, dignified housing.
Suzanne is recruiting a volunteer team to travel to El Salvador November 13-22. The cost for Thrivent members is $710 and $1050 for associate and nonmembers exclusive of airfare. Contact Suzanne at: suzanne.kocurek@thrivent.com for more information.
