Thrivent Builds With Fort Bend Habitat
Our 2009 Habitat home build starts Saturday October 12th. The address of the home we are building for the Turner family is at 903 Preston in Richmond on the corner of 10th and Preston. Our group will be working on the easternmost of the three foundations on the site. Peace Lutheran will be hosting the volunteers and providing the food for the first Saturday. The following is the build schedule with the probable  activity for the day and the site host for that day. Please note that we have a few dates without site host sponsors.

Construction Schedule


Prior to construction: All permits pulled, temporary electric pole activated, slab poured.


Sole & top plates to be laid-out & marked prior to 1st Saturday (5 people – 4 hours)


Sept 12, 2009 Site Host; Peace Lutheran
Saturday #1 – Frame exterior and interior wall sections.  Double top plate installed.  Apply OSB sheathing around exterior of house (40-60 people).


Sept 19, 2009; Need Host
Saturday #2 – Install roof trusses, sub-facia and facia. Install gable soffits, roof decking, hurricane straps, Tyvek, windows, and exterior doors (40-60 people).


Sept 26, 2009; Need host
Saturday #3 – Install roofing felt, shingles, soffits, and attic stairs.  Begin siding, (40 people).


During week: Call for rough plumbing, rough electrical, rough HVAC and get inspections.


October 3, 2009; Site Host; Trinity Lutheran
Finish work from past three weeks.  Use as a catch up week


October 10, 2009; Site Host; St. Martin
Saturday #5 – Complete siding, soffits, exterior trim, insulate house (if framing inspection complete), paint with exterior primer, and add sheetrock nailers (30 people).


Call for drywall if inspections complete.  Typically the drywall is not complete by the next Saturday.


October 17, 2009; Site Host; St. Paul Lutheran, Rosenberg
Saturday #6 – Paint exterior, level site, sweep interior, and remove trash.  Paint baseboards and casing with primer.  Go home early (25 people).


We will typically blow texture during the week (3 people – 3 hrs).




October 24, 2009; Site Hosts; Faith Lutheran and St. Philip Lutheran
Saturday #7 – Install interior doors & casing, bathroom vanity, baseboards, closet shelving, window stools, closet doors, etc.  Assemble and install kitchen cabinets.  Paint with interior primer (25 people). .


October 31, 2009 Need Site Host
- finish work not completed. Use as catch up week.


November 7, 2009; Site Host; Living Word Lutheran
Saturday #8 – Finish remaining trim, install flooring, counter tops, and electrical fixtures (fans, lights, etc.).  Paint interior walls and trim (25 people).


Call for final electrical, plumbing and HVAC installation.  Carpet installed during week.


November 14, 2009; Need Site Host
Saturday #9 – Install mini-blinds and landscape (grass & plants).  Clean up.


Each week we need an estimate of the number of volunteer builders each church can provide. Jerry Lohr is the contact person and can be reached at J_S_LOHR@HUGHES.net and 979-387-2329. Please work through your Habitat contact in your church so that they can accumulate the volunteer count and then report it to Jerry a week prior to the next build date.


New Care Abounds in Communities Projects Approved
The chapter authorized $1000 in matching funds for East Fort Bend Human Needs, First Presbyterian Church and Fort Bend Family Promise  sponsored Taste of Sugar Land Fall Festival fund raiser on Sunday November 15th. The festival begins with appetizers and auction preview at 4 pm., the ballroom opens at 5 pm. for tastings followed by the dinner. Our chapter has purchsed 20 tickets at two tables to recognize volunteers active in the chapter. We need 6 volunteers to help man a Thrivent booth for a portion of the day. The six volunteers will receive free tickets to the event. Don Fought at 281-438-4864 will be coordinating the volunteer effort. New Hope Arts & Crafts Community Bazaar
The Chapter has allocated $1600 in matching funds for a Care Abounds in Communities project sponsored by New Hope Lutheran Church to be held on November 15th. THe even will be held on the Campus of New Hope located at 1424 FM 1092  Rd in Missouri City. The bazaar will feature over 60 gift and craft booths, food service,Victorian Tearoom, bakery, silent auction, gift basket auction and Santa pictures. Doors open at 4:00 pm. Fort Bend Railroad Museum Fundraiser
The Fort Bend Wharton Chapter will once again support the Fuundraiser sponsored by the Rosenberg Railroad Museum. We have allocated $1600 in matching funds through Care Abounds in Communities in support of the museum. The fundraiser is part of a Rosenberg Commmunity Christmad festival on December 5th that attracts over 5000 people annually. The chapter will man a booth in front of the Museum to help tell the Thrivent Financial for Lutherans community service story.

El Salvador Thrivent Build Mission Trip
A group of chapter members lead by Suzanne Kocurek will travel to San Salvador, El Salvador to work on a multi home  construction and community project. The group will leave Houston for El Salvador on November 13th and return on the 22nd.
