| Thrivent & Logan County Health Department Emergency Preparedness Bag Project |
In June 2006, Mary Anderson, a LCHD employee and Thrivent member, informed the health department of a funding opportunity for a community hands-on project through Thrivent Financial for Lutherans. A hands-on service activity, defined by Thrivent Financial for Lutherans, involves volunteer labor to assemble, develop, or improve something for an identified recipient. Thrivent Financial provides financial assistance to purchase necessary materials used in the activity in which chapter service team members provide the volunteer support to the organization to complete the project. This hands-on project involves volunteers from the Logan, Mason, and Weldon Springs Thrivent Chapters assembling emergency preparedness bags and/or helping with the blood drive. Initially, it was hopeful to sponsor a blood drive, but all scheduled blood drives have been sponsored through October 2007. Therefore, the volunteer support for the blood drive includes preparing advertisement posters, preparing food for the blood drive canteen, and giving time to work shifts at the blood drive. The other volunteer opportunity is assembling the emergency preparedness bags. The scheduled date for completion of this project is Monday, November 6, 2006. The LCHD has assumed the lead role in coordinating the logistics for this project. Currently, recruiting volunteers and purchasing the supplies for the emergency bags is the focus. The Logan County Thrivent Chapter has provided numerous potential volunteers for the project. The main objective for this project is to assemble as many bags as possible with the funding provided – goal of 100. Therefore, it has been important to locate the lowest prices for the supplies needed in the bags. Moreover, donations have been sought. Walmart has donated 100 flashlights with batteries, and the LCHD has donated 100 2 oz. bottles of hand sanitizers. The backpacks have been ordered from Bright Idea, a local supplier, and will have both the LCHD and Thrivent logos imprinted on the front flap. Other projects will be ordered from the American Red Cross, Walmart, or Simpler Life Emergency Provisions, Inc., a company located in California.
As the date of the project approaches, it is important that all volunteers are informed of the project activities to occur on November 6. On Wednesday, October 18, 2006, an informational meeting for all volunteers will convene at the Logan County Health Department, Conference Room B, at 10:00 am. At this time, volunteers will sign-up for the activity in which they prefer to spend their time on the day of the project, or prior to the project. It is important for all volunteers to attend the meeting, or contact the LCHD attending the meeting if possible, to ensure the project day is a well-coordinated success. The blood drive volunteer hours will be divided into time shifts for those volunteers unable to volunteer for the entire day. The project will consume much of the day on November 6.
Lastly, LCHD would like to acknowledge Russell and Judy Funderberg for completing the blood drive posters. Also, the Logan County Thrivent Chapter should be ecstatic to have such active and dedicated members as Mary Anderson and Kenda Jones. LCHD extends a huge thank you to Mary and Kenda for aggressively recruiting

Imagine yourself as part of a group of caring people with the opportunity to decide how best to use funding that benefits people in need and your community. Imagine being able to increase the impact that money has through community involvement, awareness, additional funds raised and the caring work of many hands.
Chapter leaders with the Logan County Chapter of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans do just that with the Care Abounds in Communities® program! And with chapter leader elections just around the corner, the time to get involved is NOW! Our chapter will have (several) leadership opportunities for 2006. The only requirements are: being a Thrivent Financial member; a desire to help people; and five to 15 hours per month volunteer time (depending on the position).
We very much need you on the chapter leadership board--without a full board, our chapter will not qualify for the funding that helps people and our community. Help us take full advantage of this unique opportunity to significantly impact our community and contact Bob Huelskoetter at 217-732-3604 today to find out more or add your name to the election ballot.
