Thrivent Financial & Logan County Health Department Emergency Preparedness Bag Project
In mid-October, the Thrivent Financial/LCHD project was in its beginning stages.  Since the last report, the volunteers have attended 3 meetings- October 18, November 6, and December11.  On October 18, the Thrivent Financial members volunteered to either assemble the emergency preparedness bags at the health department or help at the blood drive on November 6.  All supplies for the emergency preparedness bags were ordered in the beginning of October with hopes that all supplies would be received by November 6.  Subway donated sandwich platters, and IGA donated chips for the volunteers' lunches on November 6.  Walmart donated 100 flashlights with batteries for the bags.  LCHD received most of the supplies by November 6, but the volunteers did reconvene on December 11 to finish stuffing the bags with the remainder of the supplies.  With the bags complete, the project is now in it's distribution phase.  To reach the special needs population, we are utilizing the LCHD Home Health, WIC, Healthworks, and Dental Programs.  The Lincoln Boy Scout Troop is replicating the bag as an Eagle Scout Project.  Volunteers are spreading the word and distributing the bags to special needs persons or other individuals who can benefit from possessing the bag.  Some bags will be saved to distribute at the health fair in the spring and for emergency preparedness education and outreach.
Preparing the emergency bags did not consume the entire grant funding.  Therefore, LCHD purchased carbon monoxide detectors.  Effective January 1, 2007, a new state law entitled "Carbon Monoxide Alarm Detector Act" requires single and multiple family residences to have at least one approved and operating carbon monoxide alarm within 15 feet of each bedroom.  The carbon monoxide detectors will be implemented as part of the LCHD Safe Kids Program.
This project would not have been as successful without the help of all the volunteers.  In recognition of their hard work, please applaud the following: Linda Aper, Shirley Aukamp, Dale and Jean Meier, Raymond Renken, Betty Schmidt, Ruth Cook, Eleanor Gunderman, Darlene Budd, Irma Leesman, Marilyn Weingarz, Karen Irwin, Juanita Joserand, Geneva Behrends, Pat and Bernie Benson, Amy Gehlbach, Linda Huelskoetter, Russell and Judy Funderburg, Katherine Yaple, Mary Anderson, Kenda Jones, John and Kay Proefrock, Don and Linda Daniels, and Emily Gilmer. Their time and cooperation was very much appreciated.
For more information about the emergency preparedness bags and carbon monoxide detectors, please contact the health department at (217) 735-2317.

Thrivent Builds
Thrivent Builds is coming to Logan County!  In cooperation with Logan County Habitat for Humanity, Thrivent Builds will be building a new home in Logan County in 2007.  This will require some volunteer hours from Thrivent Financial Lutherans to work on the home.  You will be hearing much more about this in the upcoming months.  Please consider volunteering to help on this project.
