2011 Chapter "Care Abounds in Communities" Activities
During 2011, Heartland AR Chapter, utilizing Thrivent "Care Abounds in Communities" funds, provided about $7,500 that matched about $14,900 raised by various community service teams. A total of $22,400 was thus raised in order to support a number of community activities. These activities included establishing a garden to produce food for the needy families, helping the blind and visually impaired, helping provide elder dental care, Christ Lutheran School, medical bills, prayer books for servicemen, Japan disaster, Camp Petit Jean, seminary students, Lutheran Hour Ministry, and Lutheran World Relief. About 1,080 hours of volunteer time were contributed for these activities.
What is the Thrivent's Care Abounds in Communities Program?
Is someone in your community suffering from health problems and high medical expenses? Do you know a family in financial need who could use help maintaining their home? Is there a school, community park, or camp that could benefit from new equipment? Through the "Care Abounds in Communities" program, Thrivent Financial for Lutherans provides funding to members like you who form community service teams to conduct fund-raising activities and/or hands-on service activities to help individual families and qualified not-for-profit organizations. Contact Margaret Schulz, the Community Service Team Director, at (501) 666-7209 or eandmsch@swbell.net for assistance. Do you want to help, but don't know how to get started? It's easy, there is an outline tool located at https://www.thrivent.com/community/outreach/volunteering/careabounds which is available to guide you, as well as, provide ideas, checklists, and tips so that you can successfully form a community service team and execute an activity through your Thrivent Financial for Lutherans Heartland AR Chapter.
Habitat for Humanity Home Dedicated on December 10, 2011.
A Habitat for Humanity home, located at 5002 Division Street in North Little Rock, was dedicated and turned over to the Zarate family, consisting of Jose and Elvira, two sons, and one daughter. Heartland AR Chapter member blessed the home. Francinette Herrara of Governor Beebe's Office attended the dedication. The North Little Rock Habitat project was supported by Thrivent Financial for Lutherans, utilizing Thrivent Builds funds, and by Heartland AR Chapter. About 80 volunteers, including about 60 Thrivent members, helped with the construction of Zarate's new home.
2012 Heartland AR Chapter Thrivent Builds Activity
Heartland AR Chapter has partnered with Habitat for Humanity - Pulaski County to help finance and construct a house for each of the past three years and has now received approval from Thrivent Financial for Lutherans to continue this ministry for a fourth year. So mark your calendars for a springtime wall-raising event, probably in April. The new home will be located next door to the 2011 Thrivent Builds home, 5004 Division St. in North Little Rock.
How can you participate?
# Pray that our Lord will bless this effort as together we serve our community and the partner family.
# Volunteer - as a construction worker for half a day, as someone who visits the site to say hello and encourage the workers, or as someone who brings water, snacks, or food. Throughout the construction period about 160 people will be needed to help build.
# Give - contribute to the construction with a generous donation. The Chapter's fundraising goal is $8,000 and Habitat will use the donations in excess of that amount to construct other homes.
# Invite friends to participate with you, Lutheran and non-Lutheran. This is a great opportunity to work with friends, meet others, and have some fun while working to build a new house and a better life for a Habitat partner family.

Think Spring! Think Baseball! Mark May 18 on Your Calendars
MARK MAY, 19TH ON YOUR CALENDARS. Although it may be only February and we may experience some additional winter weather, good news, Spring and baseball are just around the corner. Heartland AR Chapter of Thrivent will again sponsor a baseball game for Chapter members and guests on Friday, May 18th. We will be sponsoring a picnic at Dickey Stevens Park in North Little Rock to cheer on the Travs and enjoy some good Lutheran fellowship. For a mere $5 seat reservation, we will get you seats along the third base side, and all the hotdogs, hamburgers, popcorn, and soda you can eat before the game. As gates open at 6:00 p.m., please be out front between 5:30 and 6:00 p.m. to get a wristband that gets you in and fed. In April, we will send additional information concerning how to make reservations for the game.
Chapter Events Create Unity
Thrivent chapter activities are known for benefiting individuals in need, Lutheran organizations, and our communities. They are instrumental in unifying members and churches as they work on projects and fundraisers. Heartland AR Chapter has provided funds for Christ Lutheran School for Grandparents Day. Thrivent funds have also been used in help congregations who have needs, such as repairs, building projects, and endowment funds. Money has also been given to Firstcare for their work with the blind, and also to supplement money for dental care for the elderly in Maumelle. Thrivent Financial is ready to help again where it is needed.
At this time, the Heartland AR Chapter of Thrivent Board of Directors would like to thank Larry Crabill and his wife, Carol, for all of their support and input at our meetings and events. They have helped our board fund tee shirts for Habitat for Humanity among many other things. Pastors have also helped with getting the news out, and they have been willing to lend the use of their facilities for activities, meetings, and fundraisers. The Chapter Board and other members give a big thanks to them for their support.
