CANYONLANDS CHAPTER OF THRIVENT FINANCIAL FOR LUTHERANS
ACTIVITIES COMPLETED TO DATE
Through Thrivent Financial for Lutherans your chapter is responsible for outreach into the community.  Our Canyonlands Chapter covers all of Southern Utah from St. George on the West to Moab on the East.  We were granted almost $8,000 at the first of the year to be used for matching funds through Thrivent Financials Care Abounds in Communites™ program.  Our completed activites to date have been, [1] a Boy Scout Rummage Sale, [2] Trinity Lutheran Church Youth service project, [3] Support of the companion Unita Chapter's fund raising activity to aid their pastor's surgical expenses of a liver trahsplant, (see Thrivents magazine, fall issue, page 17), [4] Lutherwood Campsite's fund raising dinner, [5] A special Join Hands Day grant on May first providing volunteer work at the Tortoise Desert Preserve North of St. George.  (Go to www.joinhandsday.org for pictures and information on this one.)

To this date we have used half of our allocated funds in completed activites with five more approved projects to be completed by the end of the year.

ACTIVITIES STILL PENDING
The remaining approved activites to be completed are [6] a Yard Sale in Cedar City supporting the Dove Center ministry for women,  For more information on date and time, or if you have donations for this event, contact Whihelmine Dahlie (435 586-9702) or Kathleen Job ( 435 590-0930) in Cedar City, Barry Prescott ( 435 634-8342) or John Mogren (435 635-7708) in St. George, [7] Support of  The Volunteer Center of Washington's activities to provide a 211 Emergency Phone Center relieving overload on the 911 phone number.  [8] Trinity Lutheran's Octoberfest to raise funds for Dixie Care and Share. [9] The 5th. Annual Auction to support Trinity Lutheran School, and [10] Christmas Gifts of clothing for Homeless Teens.  These activites will deplete our Care Abounds in Communities™ allocation for the year. If you know of a worthy cause that could receive our support with matching funds do not be bashful about asking us for funds to support the activity.  Our activities this year have all been in the South West corner of Utah, and we would like to hear from other members of the Canyonlands Chapter for activities we could support in their locations in 2005.

From COMMUNITY SERVICE TEAM DIRECTOR Mr. Barry Prescott
I want to say a GREAT BIG THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP as the Chapter can not do these activitie without your participation.  The Chapter leaders can make decisions and approve activites but it is you, the Chapter Members, who make the activites a success and provide the help needed in the activity.

From VICE PRESIDENT John Mogren
We have received word from our Lutheran Community Services Specialist (LCSS) that there will be a new position in each of our regions chapters.  The position is titled DISASTER COORDINATOR.  This person must be a member of Thrivent Financial and will receive special training in what procedures and help will be available in times of major disasters such as storm, fires, earthquakes etc.  Our LCSS Lance Neward describes this position as being like a fire extinguisher as they would not be used unless needed but when needed be very important!

VOTE VOTE VOTE VOTE
We are privileged to live in a free country and can chose our leaders!  This year we chose our National, State, and Local Leaders.  In addition we will be choosing the leaders of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans.  The ballot for the board of director candidates will be in the Thrivent Magazine this year  (See page 30 "Get Out The Vote") of the fall 2004 issue.

CHAPTER LEADERS (2005) Vice President John Mogren
Our Chapter Leaders are elected for only one year which expires on December 31st of that year.  This means that the leaders must be reelected or replaced each fall to take office in January of the following year.  The maximum time for serving on the Chapter Board is four years.  The Vice President has the responsibility of these elections and I NEED YOUR HELP!  The ideal plan would be to elect a few new members each year so that your chapter doesn't end up with a whole slate of new leaders in one year.  I need your help in finding those members who would be willing to serve for a year on the Chapter Leadership Board for 2005.  The present Board Members will become advisors for your position if you wish to serve and share what we have learned over the past two years.
