Your Canyonlands Chapter of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans is taking part in supporting a number of worthwhile local projects. Some of our most recent contributions have gone to:
| Vacation Bible School Clean Water Project |
The youth of New Promise Lutheran Church, Shepherd of the Hills Methodist Church and Good Shepherd Presbyterian Church, through their Vacation Bible School Mission Lessons, set out to raise money to bring clean water to children and their families in Bangaladesh. To accomplish this goal, the youth built old-fashioned wells and placed them in their congregations. They then handed out 16 ounce bottles of water and asked members to drink the clean water and fill the bottles with change and return to the wells.
The project was such a big success that it brought in $2,716.69. The Canyonlands Chapter of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans supplemented the first $1,600 resulting in a total of $4,316.69 which was sent to ELCA Global Missions designated for Level II/Mission Wells. The project will bring clean water to many children and their families in Bangaladesh.
| Quilts for the Border Ministry |
The Quilting Group at New Promise Lutheran Church has sent 52 quilts to the Border Ministry. Four boxes were sent to Eagle Pass, Texas and four boxes to Chula Vista, California. They will be distributed to people in need through the ELCA Border Ministry. Canyonlands Chapter of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans funded the shipping. During 2007, the Quilting Group has given away 150 quilts.
JOIN HANDS DAY is a national day of volunteering designed to bring youth and adults together to improve their communities. Nationally, nearly 3,000 JOIN HANDS DAY activities resulted in 590,000 volunteer hours. Canyonlands Chapter took an active part in the nationwide activity. The project which your chapter chose for this year involved clean-up and restoration of the Arboretum in Santa Clara. The national Thrivent Financial for Lutherans donated $1,000 for the project which was used for cleaning and rebuilding the trails within the park and buying and planting many new cactus plants. At the conclusion of the work Canyonlands Chapter provided lunch in Santa Clara Park for all who took part.
It is a joy to take part in a church organization that presents so many opportunities to support worthwhile activities within our congregations and our communities. Funds are provided to us by Thrivent Financial for Lutherans and we pass those funds on to local activities at our discretion. Would'nt you like to be part of an organization that gives away money rather than asking for it? We have openings on the Chapter Board of Canyonlands Chapter of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans. It is not a time-consuming activity. The board meets every 2nd Saturday of each month at 10:00 AM the meetings are usually adjourned before noon. The chapter still has unallocated funds available for use in 2007. We invited you to help us distribute those funds to worthy projects.
