Stark County Chapter, Thrivent Builds - Summer 2009
THE PLAN
The Stark County Chapter of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans along with the Carroll / Harrisson Chapter in a partnership with Habitat for Humanity of Greater Stark & Carroll Counties have received a grant from Thrivent Financial for Lutherans of $ 243,750.00 to provide 65% of the cost to build 5 Habitat Houses in 2009.
The terms proposed by Thrivent and accepted by the Habitat Affiliate and the Chapter Leadership Boards are;   Habitat will provide 25% or $ 93,750.00 and take applications, screen applicants, select partner families that will put in 300 hours of sweat equity to help build Habitat Houses and purchase the house with an intrest free 30 yr. payment plan. The Habitat Staff and Volunteers will also procure lots, provide Plans and Specifications, purchase materials and deliver them to the sites when needed, get Permits  and supervise all details of construction.
Thrivent Members and their fellow Lutherans need only to contribute 10% or $ 37,500.00 and provide half of the volunteer workers at each work site each work day to provide 5 new homes.

A LITTLE HISTORY
Lutherans have been involved in helping to provide decent affordable homes with Habitat for Humanity in the Canton area since a group of Lutherans took food to provide lunch for workers when they had a Building Blitz in 1992.
The first Lutheran House was built by Lutheran Men in Mission of the Canton / Massillon Conference in 1993. It was house # 15 for the Canton Affiliate. There now more than 300 Habitat Houses in Canton.
Several times Lutheran Men in Mission were called upon to just furnish the workers to build a house when there was enough money from house payments to purchase materials.
Before the THRIVENT BUILDS PROGRAM started, a group of Lutheran Churches raised money and started to build a house. That one caught the attention of Robert Felt, a Thrivent Supervisor who arranged for us to receive a check for $ 10,000.00 to help complete it. Since that time Lutherans have provided half or more of the volunteers and 10% of the money to complete 11 more Habitat Houses.
With the completion of this years Build there will be more than 20 families living in sturdy, decent, affordable homes. Many of them moving out of deplorable substandard housing to begin a whole new life with a nice safe home.

2009 PROGRESS
All 5 houses are under Construction and on schedule.

The turnout of volunteers each Saturday has been awesome. We are seeing a lot of Partner Family Members and their friends, a lot of folks from the community that just want to help and a good number of men from the Thursday Crews that come back on Saturday to help get everything on the list for the day, done.  The folks bringing food have counted the workers and sometimes gone back to the store for more food.

That is all good news. The bad news is that with all the volunteers that are showing up, we sometimes haven't had enough Lutherans to make up 50% of workers on site for the day. (The Thrivent guidelines also require that for every 4 Lutherans at least one must be a Thrivent Member. For the first time, this year we must enter the names of all the Thrivent Members who volunteer and the days or half days they worked as well as listing all the Lutheran volunteers each day.)
The second bit of bad news is that the money for our 10% is coming in more slowly than in previous years.

WHAT CAN WE DO ?
Gather up some friends, men & women or boys & girls over 16 and come work with us. Work starts at 8:30. Come a little early to sign in and meet the Habitat Site Supervisor and receive the Safety Instructions.  Two houses are in Massillon at 1339 Walnut Rd SE and next door at 912 14th Street.  Two houses are in Waynesburg at 122 & 142 Canal St. ( Rt 183 going south into Waynesburg makes a left turn and then a right to get up to the traffic light. If you continue straight after the left turn you are on Canal.) The houses are about 1/2 block on your right.
One house is in Carrollton at 701 Garfield. Call Joanne Callas at Habitat for directions. 330-493-6500.
Also call Joanne to let her know which house you want to go to, or she can tell you where your help will be most needed that Saturday. Joanne will tell the volunteers bringing food how many to prepare for.
