Summer Picnics

Once again, your Chapter is planning 2 summer picnics in conjunction with concerts in the park at the Guy C. Myers Bandshell in Ashland.  This year we have scheduled one on Sunday and the other on Thursday.

We have reserved the picnic shelter next to the duck pond (across the drive from where we were last year) from 5:00 until 8:00 p.m.  Watch for the Thrivent Financial for Lutherans banner.  Speaking of Lutherans, ALL Lutherans are invited to attend, not just Chapter members.  You can come any time after 5:00 p.m., and we will eat at 6:15 p.m.  Bring table service and food to share.  Beverages will be provided.  Then you may walk or drive over to the band shell for the entertainment at 8:00 p.m.  This year we have selected the following from among their twice weekly schedule:

On Sunday, July 26 the "Concert" features Mark Nizer.  His is an original comedy act with world class juggling, movement, music and technology.  This has made Mark's performance one of the most popular corporate and theatrical events in the entertainment market today.  Whether its 5 ping pong balls being thrown 20 feet in the air using only his mouth; or juggling a burning propane tank, a running electric carving knife and a 16 pound bowling ball, you'll never know what is possible until you see for yourself.  You can check him out at www.nizer.com.

Thursday, August 20 The Panyard Steel Drum Ensemble will be playing traditional styles of Soca, Calypso along with a variety of Latino, Jazz, island favorites and even Classical.  This steel drum favorite returns to the Band Shell for the Season Grand Finale!  Hear these amazing musical instruments and see them up close as the musicians invite the audience to the stage as a fabulous farewell to the 60th anniversary of the Band shell.

There is a pool in the park, which is open from 11:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m.  The cost is $3:00 for adults, $2.50 for youth ages 11-15, $2.00 for children 4-10, and free for children under 4 with an adult.  There also is a wading pool for small children.  Miniature golf is available from noon until 10:00 p.m. at a cost of $3.00 for adults and $2.00 for children 12 and under.

The Guy C. Myers Band Shell was built in 1949 from funds donated by Mrs. Guy C. Myers in memory of her husband. The concerts are free; however, they do pass the hat.  A $2.00 donation is suggested.  Bench seating is available at the Band Shell, but you may bring lawn chairs or a blanket.  Brookside Park is one block south of Sandusky Street (Highway 96) on the west side of Ashland. Turn at the traffic light. (This is not Brookside West, on Boney Road, which has all of the athletic fields.)   We plan to have a map on the website.

Join Hands Day

We have approved 3 Join Hands Day projects.  On May 2 a group met at Dayspring County Home between Mansfield and Olivesburg.  We washed windows, had a picnic lunch with the residents, and played bingo.  We had the privilege of having 4 generations of one family involved.

The 2nd event is planned for May 30 & 31 at Camp Mowana.  The group will be cleaning up trails, landscaping and spreading gravel.  You are invited to join this project on Saturday, May 30 between 9 and 12, and/or Sunday afternoon, 2-5 p.m.

Our 3rd project will involve planting annuals and perrenials at Brethren Care Nursing Home in Ashland.  If you are interested in helping with this project call Doris Wanamaker at 419-281-9012.

Care Abounds in Communities Projects

We have $5,190 dollars left that we can allocate for Care Abounds in Communities projects this year.

So far 3 projects have been completed, utilizing $668.00.  Ten more projects have been approved for various areas in our 2-county Chapter, including Mansfield, Jeromesville, Shiloh, Haysville, and Ashland.

If there is a need in your community, we encourage you to submit a request to the Chapter Board.  Request forms are available at our Chapter website: www.lutheransonline.com/ashlandrichlandchapter.
If you have any questions contact any of the Chapter leaders listed in this Newsletter.

Care in Congregations

You are encouraged to work with your congregational coordinators to be certain that the Care in Congregations funds allocated to your congregation are used.  Please note that there has been a reduction in funds allocated to each congregation, a 20% reduction.  The allocation for each congregation under 500 members is $1,020.00.  For larger congregations (over 500 members) the amount is $1,250.00.  There are endless possibilities for use of Care in Congregation funds.   Let's get creative and use this money.  If you have questions contact Pastor Bonnie Peltomaa or any board member.
