Lutheran Day at the Rays a Big Hit
On May 23, 2004 Thrivent Financial members along with their friends and family showed their support for baseball and our fantastic Lutheran Camps.  As we came together to watch the Rays bet the Cleveland Indians we raised $11,000 for Lutheran Outdor Ministries of Florida and Woodlands Camp. Each camp received a check for $5500.  We had so much fun with the Pinellas Lutheran Choir singing the National Anthem and our own Bill Glasgow leading us in God Bless America during the 7th Inning Stretch.
We collected 100's of toothbrushes and tubes of toothpaste for Neighborly Care Network. When I delivered them to the local headquarters they were thrilled.
Well friends, we have an opportunity to do the baseball thing again while the Rays are on their rally.  Thrivent Financial is sponsoring another game Sunday August 22 at 1:15PM  We did not sell all our tickets last time so we are giving all of you another chance to support the camps and have some fun.  Details will be avaliabe soon regarding tickets. Our Chapter is letting another chapter head this up so wait for details before you send those ticket orders.  Many of you declined last game because of conflicting activities. Hope to see you at this game.

Join Hands Day
Thank you Hoxie Neighborhood Girl Scouts and Folks at Lutheran Apartments for 2 successful Join Hands Day projects.
The Cadett and Junior Scouts worked with Lutheran Church of the Cross to provide 32 laundry baskets full of baby supplies to the moms at Alpha House. The Scouts also sponsored a Baby Shower for the moms and their kids too.
On May 1st, residents of Lutheran Apartments in downtown St. Petersburg worked side by side with Thrivent Financial volunteers to lay 4 pallets of sod  and plant shrubs and flowers on the northwest corner of the property.  The grass is growing beautifully and the whole corner looks fantastic.  A special thanks goes out to Kevin and Kelley Grubbs who went an extra mile to spread 1500 lbs of topsoil and hand water to ensure the sucess of the project.

Party to Help Homeless Kids July 24th
Garden of Peace Lutheran Church is sponsoring a summer outdoor event on Saturday July 24th from 10AM till 1PM everyone is invited to have fun and help local kids.  We ask that you bring school supplies to donate at the event. There will be games, a moon walk, petting zoo, refreshments and a Christian Rock Band. Garden of Peace is at 6161 22nd Ave. North St. Petersburg. For details call Teresa Stewart at 727-384-9221
Garden of Peace is also setting a goal for winter of 2004-2005 to open a cold weather shelter for the homeless.  As the people of God I pray that each local congregation will ask their congregation what they can do to help.  The South Pinellas Chapter is willing to work with you.

Click for a Cure Care in Regions Knitting Project for Breast Cancer
I want to thank all the people who have given their time and talent to this scarf knitting project.  All across the state needles have been clicking and scarves have been made. I know summer is not a great time to market these little fancy neck wraps but soon everyone will be scrambling to show their support by wearing one of these beauties.
I have heard from Channel 10 News.  One of our Thrivent Financial members is a reporter and she shared our last newsletter with someone at the station and now they want to do a spot. This is fantastic. I will be calling knitters in the next few weeks to ask if you will participate in the Channel 10 event.

Chapter Board Welcomes New Leaders
Andris Ritums of the Evangelical Latvian Church has offered to serve as Assistant Financial Director for our South Pinellas County Chapter.  Andris volunteerd to serve after attending our May meeting. He brings to our chapter a wealth of knowledge and a lot of energy.

Lois Kabelitz has agreed to serve as chapter Vice President so that Marty Hougaard can assume Charles position as Congregational Service Team Coordinator. Lois has served the Lutheran fraternal community for many years and we are thrilled to have her in this Chapter.

Susan Phipps stepped down late this spring.  She and her husband Cappy are moving closer to her work in South West Florida. David Crowder will move into Susans position as Chapter Financial Director.

Fund Raising Opportunity to Help our Senior Citizens
Neighborly Care Networks are planning to have a car wash to raise funds for the local program.  These are the folks that coordinate Meals on Wheels, Transportation Services. Pharmacy Services and Adult Day Services.  I am asking Thrivent Financial members in our South Pinellas County Chapter to plan and carryout a car wash at your local church during the last week of July. Youth Groups, mens groups, sunday school classes, womens circles, any of these can plan the event.  Call me to register you intentions.  We can make it a South County Care Abounds in Communities(TM) project and raise some funds for this excellent organization. Come on folks, the price of gas itself has made it a hardship for many of the volunteers to drive the meals out to shut ins.  Marty will be calling the Congregational Coordinators to ask for your help.

National Thrivent Financial Board Elections
The election for the 2005 national Thrivent Financial for Lutherans Board of Directors will be conducted by mail this year. This is a change from the 2004 board election, in which chapters were responsible for organizing and conducting elections and reporting the results.
Holding the election by mail will simplify chapter leadership roles, make it easier for members to vote and allow chapters to focus more time on volunteer activities.
Benefit members will receive ballots through the Thrivent magazine and be able to return them by mail. Please exercise your privilege to vote and encourage other members to do the same. More details about the national board of directors election will be shared later in the year.

Some Good Reasons to Join the Chapter Board
Did you know that as a member of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans, you are a part of one of 1,378 groups, or chapters, of Thrivent Financial members?
The chapter system provides opportunities for members to "make a difference" by helping others through fund-raising or service activities. It also is an integral part of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans' mission and vision because it helps maximize the good that we do for others.
As chapter members, we help fulfill the "caring for others" portion of Thrivent Financial's mission: "Thrivent Financial for Lutherans is a faith-based membership organization called to improve the quality of life of its members, their families, and their communities by providing unparalleled solutions that focus on financial security, wellness, and caring for others."
In addition, we have the opportunity to play an important role in Thrivent Financial's vision: "Our vision is to be the organization that Lutherans, Lutheran congregations and Lutheran institutions seek first when pursuing their financial goals. More than creating financial solutions, we add the unique capability of enabling Lutherans to demonstrate their care and concern for others."
Through use of our chapter Care programs, we are able to demonstrate care and concern for others.
