Jefferson County WI Chapter, 4th Quarter 2007
MERRY CHRISTMAS and BEST WISHES FOR 2008!

Greetings from the Jefferson County Board. We wish to take this opportunity to wish you every good blessing this holiday season as we celebrate the birth of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. May the New Year be filled with peace and joy for each of you as we continue to walk with Him, talk with Him, and share the good news of His love.

BOARD MEETING NOTES

In November, in addition to the usual Directors’ Reports, Thrivent Builds Habitat Specialist Lauren Cravens (Executive Director of Jefferson Co. Habitat for Humanity) introduced herself and gave the Board a history of Habitat for Humanity in Jefferson County. We learned the program is ten years old here, with the current Cold Spring house being the sixth home built. She is looking forward to working with Thrivent Financial on future projects. Although Lauren is not a voting member of the Board, she will keep us informed as to how we can help and the status of Habitat build projects in Jefferson County from time to time.

Three requests for supplemental funds for events to be held yet in 2007 were approved, using up the last of a total of $59,990 in program funds for the year.

Our Chapter has, with this mailing, completed all of the requirements needed to achieve Chapter of Excellence Status once again for 2007.

FOR CONGREGATIONAL COORDINATORS ONLY

THANK YOU for serving your congregation as Congregational Coordinator. As you know, Thrivent Financial strongly recommends (if not requires) at least one of the three Congregational Coordinators to have an e-mail address on record. In addition, your chapter leadership board has in the past sent periodic e-mails (no more than one per month) to the CCs for the purpose of keeping you in touch with the board and to keep the line of communication open between us. Please register your e-mail address with Thrivent Financial if you have one, and/or provide it to Illene so that you can be added to the list to receive these informational e-mails. Again, thank you!

As a congregational coordinator, you may have questions or need additional information related to your role. Here is a contact list to help you:

How can you as congregational coordinators get funding for social, recognition and awareness-building events?

Social, recognition and awareness-building events are important for our membership organization. A logical place for this to occur is often at the congregation level. But how can you as congregational coordinators fund these events? You have two options:

1. Raise/collect funds in conjunction with a Care in Congregations® activity.

Congregational service teams can host fund-raisers, which can be as simple as a collection or appeal. The funds raised, along with supplemental funds from the Care in Congregations program, can be used to pay for the expenses associated with social, recognition and awareness-building events that occur throughout the year.

2. Ask your chapter for operating funds.

As a congregational coordinator, you can request operating funds from your chapter leadership board to help fund these types of events. A portion of the operating funds provided to chapters includes an allocation for social, recognition and awareness-building events. Because your leadership board may receive many requests for operating funds, be sure to highlight the reasons and potential benefits of the event as well as how the funds will be used.

If your chapter leadership board provides operating funds to you for social, recognition or awareness-building events, the chapter leadership board will report it as an expense. To prevent double counting of the dollars as expenses, please do not report as expenses any operating funds provided to you from the chapter leadership board. The board is accountable for all operating funds and is responsible for reporting these expenses.

LET’S MAKE A GOOD WEBSITE EVEN BETTER, TOGETHER!

We realize not every household owns a computer and has internet access. However, folks of all walks of life, youth and senior citizens alike, are becoming more and more depending upon this wonderful tool. It’s a fantastic source of information, for better or worse ... but its here to stay. It has been my pleasure to take the website from an empty template to where it is today, and now it’s time to pass the torch. Joanne has stepped up to the plate and agreed to give the position of Communications Director a shot. She will serve you well, and the Board well, of that we are confident. She currently maintains the website for her congregation, St. John’s Lutheran Church in Waterloo. She will enter the approved Care Abounds in Communities activities on the calendar, so check it often and support those activities when possible, please. She will periodically check the Message Boards and Guestbook areas of the site, so go check it out and leave her some encouragement! Remember to Login first, however, in order to use those features. She will do her best to add pictures with captions to the photo albums (and I’ve offered to teach her “digital scrapping” whenever and if ever she’s interested!) Go visit, if you haven’t already, and be sure to save the website to your “Favorites.”

A MESSAGE FROM THE EDITOR

Well, my time on the Board has come to conclusion. Some of you know that I was a “write in” on the 2003 ballot. Since I was a Congregational Coordinator at the time, I saw my name and wrote “respectfully decline” on it. Steve Zillmer called me anyway, and here we are four years later. I’m glad I said “yes” and I encourage you to say “yes,” too. We’ve all been given gifts, and what a privilege to serve God with friends and neighbors in this manner. Perhaps you have a good idea to help an organization or persons in need in your community. Perhaps you know a few others who would help you bring the idea to the table and turn it into an activity. Perhaps you, too, will know the joy. Many of you already know, since Jefferson County Chapter is such a success (2006 Fraternal “Lodge of the Year”!) because of YOU. Perhaps you will consider a position on the Board in the future. For now, on behalf of Becky Pfeifer and Troy Milbrath and myself, we thank you for the opportunity to serve and will “see you around.” Sincerely, Lynn Mehringer
