Norhern Utah Chapter of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans Newsletter
by Robert Mortstadt Shown below is a summary of the Care Abounds in Communities(TM) projects that were approved for 2003 by your Northern Utah Chapter. The far right-hand column shows the supplemental funds from Thrivent Financial for each project. Remember that all of the listed fund-raisers were able to raise at least the same amount or more from individual contributions as the supplemental funds. Thus, in a real way the amount of money going into community projects exceeded the total of $9,875 provided by Thrivent Financial. (Nearly another $10,000 was given directly to the 7 Lutheran churches in the Northern Utah Chapter, which is not discussed here.) Although, all the community service teams (CST) shown in this table drew most of their members from one of the 7 churches, that does not need to be case. Any group of 6 Thrivent Financial households can form a CST. The CST does not need to be associated with a church. In some cases the recipients can be a family or an individual as was the case with the first 2 recipients listed in the table. The Redden Family as reported in last year’s newsletter had extensive fire damage to their home. Mr. Steve Olsen fought a valiant fight against a rare and painful disease that required a stem cell transplant. Steve is no longer suffering in this world and is now with our Lord. About $200,000 was raised nationally for this effort and the doctors gained valuable experience in using these new techniques. Please consider being a member of the Northern Utah Chapter Leadership Board (CLB) for 2005. Last year our N. Utah Chapter Board had 8 members. Several solid contributors have stepped down over the course of time, but enough interest has been generated that we now have a full 10-member Board for 2004. We want to thank all Thrivent Financial members for helping our community.

by Bruce Marlow Thrivent Financial for Lutherans offers monetary support for both Lutheran and non-Lutheran related, not for profit organizations and for personal disaster support in Northern Utah. Thrivent Financial member service teams can apply for this support by doing the following: · Identify a worthy, not for profit activity, not directly associated with the church, e.g., a needy person or family in the congregation where specific items of support can be provided; non-church related, but supported organizations (WELCA / WLCMS Quilting projects; Boy Scout, Preschool and Yard Sale fund-raisers; Purchase of specified equipment in public schools; Disabled Craft Activities), etc. · Form a Community Service Team, consisting of at least six (6) Thrivent Financial members from separate households. · Contact Bruce Marlow, at Ascension Lutheran, (801) 782-9300 or JOBRUMAR@ATT.NET to complete the paperwork and get the request started. Thrivent Financial funding can be allocated as either supplemental funds for a specific fund-raising project or as funding for a hands-on service activity.
Care in Congregations Receipts
For a Care in Congregations™ activity, what receipts does the congregational service team need to provide to the chapter leadership board? The congregational service team needs to provide the chapter leadership board with all receipts or legible photocopies of receipts for expenses that it incurred in doing the Care in Congregations™ fund-raising or hands-on service activity. For example, if a congregational service team holds a soup dinner fund-raiser to purchase a new copy machine for the congregation, the service team should submit the receipts or legible photocopies of the receipts for the expenses associated with the fund-raiser itself such as expenses for the food. The service team should not submit the receipt for the new copy machine because that is not an expense of the fund-raiser and because it is a cost to the congregation, not the service team.
Good Reasons for Volunteering
by Robert Morstadt There are many good reasons for volunteering for a Thrivent Financial chapter leadership position. One of the best is helping someone in dire need of medical attention. This recently happened to Pastor Sterle from Vernal, Utah, who needed a liver transplant. A Thrivent Financial volunteer, Cheryl Bonnie, in the Uinta Chapter saw the need and has helped raised $20,000 for his operation. This is almost too much money for one chapter to raise, but other chapters can help. Our Northern Utah Chapter voted unanimously to send $1,000 to this worthy cause. We are happy to report that Pastor Sterle is recovering nicely and has already returned to work part-time. There is also a very practical side. If we do not fill the top 5 required chapter leadership positions, i.e., president, vice-president, records director, financial director, and congregational service team director, our chapter will not be eligible for any Thrivent Financial funding. As a special footnote, in another 2 years, 4 of the current leaders must step down for at least one year as written in the Thrivent Financial bylaws (4-year service is the maximum). It would be best for new volunteer leaders to be elected to the Board before that happens.
Volunteerism is also important at the congregational level, because each church must have 3 congregational coordinators in order to receive Thrivent Financial funding for that church. Our Northern Utah Chapter was fortunate to have all these positions filled in 2004. All of our churches are eligible for at least $1,300 in supplemental funds for congregational spending (Our Saviors and St Paul’s have $1,600). When combined with each church’s fund-raisers, each church could conceivably receive $2,600 or more for the year 2004 to spend on church projects. Although, this does not make or break the church budget of any of our 7 congregations, it does allow all of our churches to do something extra that probably couldn’t be done otherwise.
However, this is only half of the story, because Thrivent Financial allots another possible $10,640 in supplemental funds for Northern Utah for a variety of community outreach spending in 2004. If you are not interested in running for a Chapter leadership position for 2004, then please consider being a congregational coordinator next year or a member of a community service team. Together, we can make a difference.

This is free money for your congregations; all that is required is VOLUNTEERS....
