NEWS FOR SAN MATEO COUNTY CHAPTER MEMBERS
THRIVENT FINANCIAL BENEVOLENT DOLLARS PROVIDE MUCH COMMUNITY SUPPORT
Lutheran congregations in the San Mateo County Chapter of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans have provided over $30,000 for a variety of community projects. These projects include supporting a student at the Lutheran Navajo Mission in Arizona, a family in Daly City that lost their house in the winter floods last year, care for two residents at Sunnyview Lutheran Home who have exhausted their resources, scholarships for youths to go to Mexico to help build homes, assistance with travel expenses for Girl’s State winners, support for the Peninsula Asian Missionary Society, construction assistance for a school for children with cerebral palsy. Not all of the supplemental funds available to congregations through the Chapter have been requested. The Chapter board will allocate the remaining $6,000 by early December. Congregations are encouraged to apply for the remaining funds to make a difference in our communities.
CONGREGATIONS RECEIVE SIGNIFICANT SUPPORT FROM THRIVENT FINANCIAL SUPPLEMENTAL FUNDS
Nearly all 19 congregations in the San Mateo Chapter of Thrivent Financial have used supplemental funds to provide needed assistance within their congregations. Some of the projects funded by Thrivent Financial matching funds projects include assisting church schools with playground equipment, a new building and additional storage cabinets; painting or refurbishing the church building; refurbishing the parsonage, assisting with youth activities (including sending youth to confirmation camp and to the national youth gathering); and assisting with the “House Next Door” to house homeless families. Congregation fund raising activities for the supplemental funds have included rummage sales, free-will offerings, breakfasts, a hot dog and chili supper, a St. Patrick’s Day dinner, barbecues, crab feeds, a school musical and a white elephant sale.

HELP IS OFFERED TO HURRICANE VICTIMS
Thrivent Financial for Lutherans has issued two challenge grants for hurricane relief. For both “Florida Hurricanes” and “2004 Hurricanes Response” Thrivent Financial is challenging its members to raise $2 million or more, through their chapters, and Thrivent Financial will supplement the funds raised with an additional $1 million if the challenge is met. Should members raise less than $2 million, Thrivent Financial still will supplement 50 cents for each $1 raised. The new “2004 Hurricanes Response” challenge was issued because the Florida Hurricanes challenge can benefit only Florida residents because Lutheran Services Florida, the administrator of those funds, only serves Florida.
Local congregations in San Mateo County are to receive hurricane contributions and then forward those funds on to the Chapter. All checks for hurricane relief should be made payable to San Mateo County Chapter, Thrivent Financial for Lutherans.
IMPORTANT DATES TO REMEMBER - WRAPPING UP 2004 AND GEARING UP FOR 2005
November 30 – Last day for chapter leader elections December 5 – Last day for Chapter to receive 2004 funding requests
December 22 – Last day requests for 2004 Care in Congregations® requests
December 23 to January 4 – A blackout period on the computer system will not allow anyone to request funds during this time.
January 5, 2005 – Begin to enter requests for 2005 funds
Please note that the supplemental funds provided by Thrivent Financial are annual programs and so those funds do not carry over from one year to the next. Requests to use current year funding must be made in the year the activity is being held. For example, you cannot request funding 2004 supplemental funds for an activity that will be held in 2005.
"GIVING PLUS" EXTENDS YOUR CHARITABLE GIVING
If you would like to extend your charitable giving, then “Giving Plus,” Thrivent Fianancial’s individual member matching gift program, is the answer! Gifts of up to $400 per member made to Lutheran institutions (schools, Lutheran Social Services, seminaries, or Mt. Cross, for example) can be matched at $.50 on the dollar by Thrivent Financial. Many of our Chapter congregations have affiliated schools that could benefit from this program. More information can be found at www.thrivent.com. Your local financial Representative/Associate would be happy to do a presentation on “Giving Plus” to your school board or church council. One thing to remember is that contributions to a congregation are not eligible for the “Giving Plus” program.
UPDATING RECORDS IS HELPFUL
The list of San Mateo County Chapter members shows that over half of the Chapter members (that is, those living in San Mateo County) have no congregation affiliation listed. Nearly half of the others show congregations in other areas of California or out-of-state. We recommend that you check with your congregational coordinator, or your Thrivent Financial Representative, to determine if your congregation affiliation is listed accurately.
