| Thrivent Financial Supports Local Congregations And Community Organizations |
In the first half of this year Thrivent Financial for Lutherans has supplied 12 congregations in the San Mateo County chapter with approximately $13,000 in the form of supplemental grants for Care in Congregations. These congregations have used these dollars for painting/repairing the church building, sending confirmands to camp, adding storage cabinets to the church, providing support for youth toattend the Youth Gathering, renewing the parsonage, refurbishing school classrooms, and supporting the church's building fund. In addition, Thrivent Financial has provided $6,500 to support a variety of community organizations. Three congregations have raised funds through Care Abounds in Communities(TM) for such organizations and groups as supporting a family in Daly City that lost everything in last winter's flood, providing scholarships for youth to go to Mexico to construct homes, supplying travel expenses for community youth to attend Girls' State, and supporting missionaries.

The San Mateo County Chapter Leadership Board has established September 1 as the date by which congregations should apply to the Board for Care Abounds in Communities funding. Congregations use Care Abounds upplemental funds to support charitable community organizations. Chapter funds remaining after that date will be available to congregations that have already received funding through the Chapter.
| San Mateo County Chapter Board Seeks Candidates for Election |
The Chapter Leadership Board is seeking candidates fo fill several elected positions on the Board for 2005. Required elected positions are President, Vice-president, Records Director, Financial Director, and Congregational Service Team Director. In addition, several additional optional elected poitions are also available. These positions include Communiccations Director, Assistant Financial Director, Community Service Team Director, Youth Director, and Events Director. Any Thrivent Financial member living in the County is eligible for election. However, Congregational Coordinators cannot both serve as Coordinators and as Board members, and elected Board members must come from different households. The Chapter Board may also be assisted by appointed advisory members who are non-elected, non-voting members of the Board. Current Board members are President, Mary L. Lasley, Holy Cross; Vice-president Rev. Jeff Schufreider, First/Hope Lutheran, Daly City; Financial Director, Mary Lee Miner, Holy Cross; and Congregational Service Team Director, Marion McDowell, Holy Trinity. | Talented Singers Come to Bay Area |
Conspirare, a talented ensemble of 30 professional singers from across the United States, will perform in the Bay Area July 29 to August 1. Craig Hella Johnson, who trained at St. Olaf in Minnesota, conducts the ensemble that is based in Austin, Texas. Conspirare has toured throughout Texas and the Southwest, and in 2002 inaugurated an extended residency program at Mills College in Oakland. In 2003, Conspirare performed at Carnegie Hall, Avery Fisher Hall, and Riverside Church in New York City as part of the American Choral Directors Association's national convention.
The choir will begin production in August 2004 of a new CD with recording sessions at Skywalker Ranch in Marin County.
