San Mateo County Chapter, INFORMATION YOU CAN USE! !
CHAPTER "INFORMATION DAY" A GREAT SUCCESS
Grace Lutheran Church, San Mateo, hosted a very successful San Mateo County Chapter event in January.  Sixty-two people attended, nearly filling the room.  Chapter Records Director Marilyn McKenna and her husband prepared all of the soup for the event – and what a delicious treat that was! She also beautifully decorated the church/school social hall.  Heidi Struve, Lutheran Community Services Manager, joined us as her last official act before moving to Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, to start a new career as a Thrivent Financial Associate. Sheilah Lynch, our new Lutheran Community Service Specialist, brought excellent information from the benevolent side of Thrivent.  Andrea Turner from the Thrivent, Roseville office attended also, bringing information about recruiting Financial Associates for the mid and southern portion of San Mateo County.

JOIN HANDS DAY IS MAY 6
An exciting opportunity to bring members of all ages together to help your community is right around the corner.  The seventh annual JOIN HANDS DAY is Saturday, May 6.  This day brings youth and adults together to plan and conduct activities that improve their communities, while at the same time forming new and lasting relationships across generations. JOIN HANDS DAY is our day to shine – to show others the unique and special nature of our organization and to help them see and experience the impact our volunteers make every day.  Although Chapters are urged to hold their activities on May 6, they may conduct activities any time between April 1 and June 30.

Thrivent Financial for Lutherans encourages each chapter to support at least two JOIN HANDS DAYS activities in 2006.  Imagine the good that will be accomplished with that kind of participation and the impact it will have on our communities.  If you have some ideas about activities that the San Mateo County Chapter can conduct for JOIN HANDS DAY, please contact Pastor Jeff Schufreider, Chapter President at 650-273-1202, Events Director Bette Blake at 650-589-8449, or Community Service Team Director Pastor Paul Michaelson at 650-593-7483.

SERVICE TEAMS HAVE TWO OPPORTUNITIES FOR FUNDING
Care in Congregations® and Care Abounds in Communities®.  Both Care programs require that each congregation have three Congregational Coordinators to be able to access these funds.  Fund raising projects can be as simple as a special offering or more elaborate such as a concert, a play production or an Easter breakfast.  Both care programs require participation by at least six individual Thrivent members from different households.

Care in Congregations®.    These funds can be used for any project within the congregation, including the church’s school.  All funds must be requested before the fundraising activity takes place.  Congregational coordinators can enter the request for funds on line at Thrivent.com/members or by calling 1-800-236-3736.  Marion McDowell, Congregational Service Team Director, is also available to help.  Her telephone number is 650-591-5949.  Thrivent urges congregations to apply for these funds before early November.

Care Abounds in Communities®.  The San Mateo County Chapter has been allotted a little over $19,000 for community projects.  The Chapter board has determined that it will allocate up to $1,000 to each of the congregations for community projects provided the requests are received by September 1.  After that, the remaining Chapter Care Abounds in Communities dollars will be allocated for other projects sponsored by congregations that have previously received funds.  Care Abounds in Communities grants can be used for the congregations’ schools as well as projects in the greater community.  Requests for Care Abounds in Communities dollars go to Financial Director Adele Koch, using a specific request form.  She can be reached at 650-364-3968.

CHAPTER ELECTIONS ARE COMING!
Before you know it we will be having Chapter elections again!  Two Chapter Board members, Pastor Jeff Schufreider and Marion McDowell, will be “term limited out” at the end of this year.  Begin now to encourage potential candidates to take part in Chapter activities and then be ready to run for election. Greg Bohlmann, Chapter Vice President, will be in charge of the election this Fall.  He can be reached at 650-508-8415.
