The ninth annual JOIN HANDS DAY was held on Saturday, May 31, 2008. This day is sponsored by Thrivent to encourage youth and adults to come together to improve their communities. Thrivent chapters conduct nearly 3,000 JOIN HANDS DAY activities nationwide annually, resulting in nearly 590,000 volunteer hours of service. As we have done in prior years, this year the San Mateo County Chapter of Thrivent adopted Francis State Beach in Half Moon Bay. All congregational members, family and friends in San Mateo County were invited to this fun event. We spent the morning of Saturday, May 31 picking up litter at Francis State Beach. This was followed by a splendid picnic barbeque supplied by Thrivent. Chris Benson from Thrivent served as the master chef with assistance from the board members of the San Mateo County Chapter of Thrivent.
If your congregation needs Thrivent cups and napkins they must be requested. They will not be ordered unless the board receives a request from your congregational coordinator. The San Mateo County Chapter consists of the members of Thrivent from the eighteen congregations in San Mateo County. The Chapter Leadership Board of Directors are nominated and elected by the Thrivent members of the chapter once a year. The board oversees the distribution of thousands of dollars, which are raised by the congregations at the Care Abounds in Communities events.
Please submit names for nomination by September 25th or earlier. Several required positions on the San Mateo County Chapter Leadership Board will need to be filled for the 2009 year. Elections will take place at the ICE CREAM SOCIAL on October 12, 2008.
In the past ballots were mailed to each congregation which decided on a date and held individual elections for their congregational members only. This year ballots will be provided at the ICE CREAM SOCIAL on October 12, 2008 and all Thrivent members attending will vote at the same time. BE SURE TO ATTEND SO YOU CAN CAST YOUR BALLOT.
Our annual ICE CREAM SOCIAL will be held on October 12, 2008 from 2:00 to 4:00 pm at Hope Lutheran Church in San Mateo and is for all Thrivent members and their guests. Thank you to the congregations who have submitted their funding requests for their Care Abounds in Communities projects. If your congregation has not yet submitted their request, it is important that you submit it AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. The board needs to consider the total amount of funds requested and the distribution of the funds remaining after all requests have been processed. It's extremely stressful for the financial director to be waiting for requests at the last minute. Please help us accomplish this task in a timely and fair manner. Thank you for your help.
The San Francisco and San Mateo County chapters are jointly considering the possibility of starting a Thrivent Builds project in San Mateo County. That is an exciting possibility.
