San Mateo County Chapter, CHAPTER NEWS, NOVEMBER 2008
THE 2008 ICE CREAM SOCIAL
What a lovely event. The congregational service team at Hope Lutheran in San Mateo had decorated the tables in beautiful fall colors. About 75 members and friends attended. Chris Benson our San Mateo County Thrivent Financial Consultant, acted as master of ceremonies in the absence of Greg Bohlmann, chapter president, who could not be there. Chris told us that 72 Chapter activities were conducted by the San Mateo County Chapter, resulting in 9,384 volunteer hours. FUNDS RAISED by these local teams totaled $l09,772, which, combined with $54,316 from Thrivent financial to multiply the good we can do together, made a total of $164,088. Greg Jahnke, who is the Thrivent Senior Financial Consultant in the San Francisco office, spoke to us about Thrivent's strength and gave us some advice for these confusing financial times.
Elections were held for the 2009 Chapter Leadership Board. We had drawings for door prizes, which included Target gift cards and 5 beautiful gift baskets, made by Jo Zemke. Jo works for the Thrivent team in the San Francisco office and attends Our Redeemer in South San Francisco. As always, it was a great day to visit old friends, enjoy the soft background music and eat ice cream and cookies. Hope to see you there again in 2009.

LUTHERAN CHURCH BASEMENT WOMEN
Refrain: OH-Us Lutheran church women we're none but the best, we come into serve from the east or the west. The basement's our home, we will work night or day, we'll clean and we'll cook the old fashioned way. First Lutheran Church in South San Francisco is planning a dinner on November 22nd. The dishes served will be made from recipes taken from a little book called Lutheran Church Basement Women.by Janet Martin and Allen Todnem. The book is dedicated to Lutheran women who through the years have served the church by cooking, serving and cleaning, usually in the church basement. It features recipes and customs handed down through the years, many brought from Norway, Sweden, Germany, etc. It includes The secret of how to make jello "Lutheran", Egg coffee, Tried and true "dead spreads" for funerals, Lutheran aprons and the six types a Lutheran lady needs to own, etc. Times to bring food to the pastor. One recipe that caught my eye begins: To prepare fried chicken for the Sunday School Picnic: Go out to the chicken coop and and find yourself 14 or 15 old biddies who haven't been keeping up their end of the bargain as far as laying eggs goes, go to the chopping block and................................ It also includes some pretty funny comments, songs and poems. There will also be a video of Rev. Steve Molin, "the Sign Guy". "If there were no Lutherans. would there still be green jello?"
If you would like to attend, please call 650-589-8449.
OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD
During the months of October and November, millions of gift-filled shoe boxes are sent to Samaritan's Purse for distribution to hurting children around the world. Operation Christmas Child takes a massive effort involving tens of thousands of volunteers working at six processing centers around the United States. Last year again the Franklin Graham Ministries, Samaritan Purse, gave out millions of boxes to children around the world. First Lutheran Church in South San Francisco has been filling shoe boxes for several years. This year they will do their part by having a goal of 50 boxes. Their prayer is that the children who receive these shoeboxes filled with their gifts may come to know Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. "Jesus said, 'Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.'" Matthew 19:14. This year, for the first time, they received a beautiful thank you letter from one of the children that received one of their shoeboxes last year in the Philippines.
