Come to the Beach for Join Hands Day
Join Hand Day is Saturday, May 30. Please join us this year for fun and fellowship (and some work too!) as we return to Francis Beach in Half Moon Bay to clean up and enjoy a barbecue lunch.

Francis Beach is located a half-mile west of Highway 1 at the end of Kelly Avenue in Half Moon Bay. Take Highway 92 east to Highway 1 south. Kelly Avenue is the first right-hand turn. Beach clean up will begin at 9:00 am followed by lunch and refreshments at 12:00 noon. The weather may be breezy and cool so please dress in layers and comfortable shoes.

Please RSVP by phone or email with your name and number of people in your group by Tuesday, May 26 to Beth Lau, 650-368-3087 or bethshabelman@sbcglobal.net

We look forward to seeing you in Half Moon Bay at the beach for Join Hands Day!

Congregational Coordinators Were Honored Sunday, March 1, 2009
More than 30 Thrivent members and their guests turned out to honor Congregational Coordinators on March 1. The group met for a luncheon meeting and raffle prizes at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in South San Francisco.

Rev. Jeffrey Schufreider, Chapter President, led a brainstorming session to generate ideas for Join Hands Day, which is to be held on Saturday, May 30. There was interest in returning to Francis Beach in Half Moon Bay. This year we will reprise clean up on the beach. (Please see the article above with complete details on Join Hands Day.)

Marion McDowell, Congregational Service Team Director, gave a comprehensive overview of the responsibilities of the Congregational Coordinators and answered questions.

Additional business was introduced when Rev. Schufreider asked for a volunteer or a recommendation for the board position of Financial Director. He then continued by giving an outline of the qualifications for Care Abounds in Communities projects within the San Mateo County Chapter.

The luncheon meeting ended when table centerpieces given out and special thanks was given to the Congregational Coordinators for serving in 2009. Special thanks to all San Mateo County Chapter Congregational Coordinators and everyone who joined us on March 1st.

National Volunteer Week 2009: "Celebrating People in Action"
The theme for National Volunteer Week, which was commemorated April 19-25, was "Celebrating People in Action." The theme captured the meaning behind this signature week – honoring the individuals who dedicate themselves to taking action and solving problems in their communities.

National Volunteer Week 2009 "Celebrating People in Action," presented an opportunity for individuals, families, nonprofit organizations and government entities alike to celebrate the ordinary people who accomplish extraordinary things through service. Thank you to all of you who volunteer in our churches, schools and communities!

How to Help Your Congregation
Did you know that Thrivent Financial for Lutherans has a program called Care in Congregations® where funding is provided to Thrivent Financial members to conduct fund-raising and/or hands-on service activities to benefit your congregation or its related Lutheran institutions? In fact, Thrivent Financial members are encouraged to use the funds to help the congregation in its ministry to the community.
If you see a need in your congregation that could be helped through this funding, please contact a Thrivent Financial congregational coordinator in your congregation. If you don't know who your three congregational coordinators are, please contact Marion McDowell by phone, 650-591-5949 or email, mmcdowel@seq.org. Marion will help you get in touch with a coordinator.
