Join Hands Day - Musgrove Mill State Park

On May 5, 2007, on the national Join Hands Day, a group came together at Musgrove Mill State Park to contribute some of their time to help the appearance of the park.  Musgrove Mill is a Revolutionary War site and is a fairly young state park.  It was created about six years ago and is still developing.

It was a very rainy day, but there were some Girl Scouts, Lutherans, and some neighbors of the park that worked on planting shrubbery and flowers.  The rain never stopped.  In the beginning it was just a steady sprinkle.  About lunchtime, it became a downpour.  There were plans to build some benches, but the park workers put them together the day before so they would not have a pile of wet wood lying around that would go bad.

Those that did show up felt really good about what they accomplished, especially in such bad weather.

Join Hands Day - Woodruff City Hall

June 30, 2007 became a day of work, fellowship, and sweat.  Boy Scouts, members of the Spartanburg County Community Emergency Response Team, local residents, and a few Lutherans came together to do some landscaping for a Join Hands Day project.  The group’s objective was to make the front of Woodruff City Hall look a bit better.  There were rose bushes, green shrubs, and flowers planted.  Bricks from the local cotton mill that had burned were used as a border around the flower beds.  One flower bed was put in front of the city hall sign.  A concrete birdbath and bench were installed to make the area look inviting.

There was hedge trimming done, as well as some weed eating and grass mowing.  Since there had been no rain in such a long time, the ground was extremely hard.  It really took a lot of effort to dig those holes for the shrubs and plants.  A Boy Scout leader, Mark Phillips, and his boys worked extremely hard.

Hot dogs were served along with chips, cookies, and drinks.  Everyone worked hard and new friends were made.  The CERT team, led by Robbie Swofford,  came down from Spartanburg to lend a hand and some of them even had to get directions. That is surely a sign of neighbor helping neighbor.
