Community Projects for 2004
The Pines Chapter of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans had another exciting year in 2004. We were able to help many community organizations and, thus help our neighbors in the community. Our Chapter started the year with $9,430 from Thrivent Financial for the Care Abounds in Communities™ program. We were able to raise and additional $15,724 and were able to provide a total of $25,154 to local organizations for use in the community. The non-profit organizations that were helped are: Sandhills Interfaith Hospitality Network Moore Coalition for Human Care Sandhills Food Bank
The funds raised for these organizations came from the annual Our Saviour Lutheran Church Bazaar and the Canned Film Festival.
In addition to the above community projects, the congregations also raised $1,862 for the Hurricane Relief effort provided by Lutheran World Relief.
In 2004, the Chapter was active in the Join Hands Day nationwide project. Thrivent Financial gave each Chapter $1,000 to be used in some way for a project that involved youth and adults working together. Our Chapter worked with a local organization to help reroof a house in Southern Pines. We used the $1,000 to help pay for the shingles. Youth from St. James and Our Saviour participated in the project along with adults from both congregations. It was really great to see how our youth were eager to help others.
Congregation Projects for 2004
The four congregations in our Chapter in 2004 held 14 Hands-on Service and Fund-raiser projects to help with congregation needs. These activities included a hike-a-thon, care meal ministry, Advent Devotional Booklets, Greening of the Church, Spaghetti dinner and dessert silent auction, landscape project, electrical distribution project, video taping of sermons and church services, and handicap accessable project. These were carried out within the congregations by Thrivent Financial members and other volunteers with support from the Care in Congregations® allocation from Thrivent Financial.
Expansion of Chapter for 2005
In 2005, our region has asked the Pines Chapter to include Scotland County in our Chapter. We now cover Montgomery, Moore, Richmond and Scotland Counties. This expands our congregations supported to five. The congregations are: Living Waters Lutheran Church - Laurinburg, Scotland County Our Saviour Lutheran Church - Southern Pines, Moore County St. James Lutheran Church - Southern Pines, Moore County St. Paul Lutheran Church - Pinehurst, Moore County St. Paul Lutheran Church - Hamlet, Richmond County
The following people were voted or appointed to be on the Pines Chapter Board of Directors: Henry Fuhrmann - President, Our Saviour Clark Russell - Vice President, St. James Patty Peeples - Records Director, Our Saviour Nan Cunningham - Financial Director, St. James Sally Price - Congregational Service Team Director, Living Waters Don Barcus - Community Service Team Director, Our Saviour
Several positions on the Board are open and should be filled. If you have an interest in helping the Chapter by being a Board member, please contact Henry Fuhrmann (910-695-0509).
Planned Community Projects for 2005
The Board of Directors has approved the following non-profit organizations to be recipients of our fund-raising for 2005: Sandhills Interfaith Hospitality Network (SIHN) Moore Coalition for Human Care Sand Hills Food Bank Moore Aliance Nourishing Neighbors, Amen! (MANNA)
These organizations provide help to the community in general for the Counties in our Chapter.
As stated earlier, the Pines Chapter includes four Counties. If you have received this newsletter, Thrivent Financial has assigned you to the Pines Chapter. If you attend a church other than those listed earlier, and want to transfer your Chapter membership to a Chapter that supports your congregation, please contact Thrivent Financial directly at 1-800-236-3736. Only you can make this change.
I think that you can agree that we had another successful year in 2004. It is only through the work of many people like you that we can make a difference in our communities. Thrivent Financial helps us by providing certain monies that we can use to supplement our fund-raising and hands-on service projects. It is up to each of us to use our time and talents to help make a difference. Your participation in chapter activities is needed to make us a success. Please keep in mind that Thrivent Financial has a limit on how many consecutive years members can hold office on the Chapter Board. Next year will be the last year that several of us can serve in this capacity. We need your help as an active member to fill positions and keep our chapter alive and active. Please give some serious thought about how you can help.
Thanks for all of your hard work.
Henry P. Fuhrmann President, Pines Chapter
