Living Word, Laurinburg • This annual activity is a Holiday Bazaar which includes selling bake sale items, homemade crafts, hot dogs and three separate basket raffles. Thrivent and congregational members work together to put on an exciting Holiday bazaar. The income earned will be used to make repairs to the building, due to age and weathering of the building.
The five Lutheran churches in our chapter collected specific items for Health Kits for Lutheran World Relief. Each kit contained a hand towel, washcloth, soap, toothbrush, comb, nail clipper and Band-Aids. We met on May 28, 2008 at Our Saviour Lutheran Church and enjoyed a pizza dinner, watched a video from Lutheran World Relief called "Ordinary to Extraordinary" and assembled the kits. Together we made 169 Health Kits and collected 266 bars of soap. The kits and soap were shipped to Lutheran World Relief. Thrivent provided $1000.00 for the expenses of the project. – Patty Peeples, coordinator
Lutheran Habitat Work Day was held on Saturday, Sept. 13, in Aberdeen. All five of our congregations were notified and encouraged to send workers. Enough workers came that they were put to work at two different sites. Thrivent Builds – We were not given the opportunity to raise the walls on a Thrivent Builds home in 2008. That did not stop our interest in applying for a 2009 Habitat home! Both the Pines Chapter and Habitat for Humanity of the NC Sandhills have submitted applications and we have just this week received the news: we were awarded a Habitat Home to be built in 2009!
All five congregations were given the opportunity to participate in a fund appeal to help those whose lives have been affected by Hurricane Ike. As part of this National Chapter Response, Thrivent will add $1 to every $2 raised, up to $250,000, in support of relief efforts. All funds will be contributed to Lutheran Disaster Response and the WELS Committee on Relief. The Pines Chapter received $650 in donations.
