Central Blue Ridge NC Chapter, Summer Update
Busy in 2007!
The Central Blue Ridge NC Chapter has been busy in 2007.  Already, 11 activities have been approved, and of those, six have already been completed.  These are a combination of hands-on service activities and fundraisers.  Activities have supported Dental Hygiene Kits for Toothsavers, Fleece Quilts for Mission Hospital Pediatrics, Mountain Classic Golf Benefit, Crume family collection, Mission Luncheon, and Miraflores Build.  In addition, three more activities have been approved so far during the rest of 2007, and we're sure you're thinking of more ways we can help our communities.

New Chapter President Elected
The position of President was vacated when Rev. John McHenry accepted a call to the pastoral ministry.  The Board would like to express it's appreciation for Pastor McHenry's service.  The Chapter Leadership Board elected Dr. Michael Toedt, MD of Whittier, NC to the fill the vacancy and complete the remainder of the 2007 term.

The chapter leadership board helps to provide strategic direction, leadership planning, and administration to support congregational and community service teams of members who volunteer together. The elected leaders also allocate chapter funding to support fundraising and hands-on service activities conducted by chapter members.

Dr. Toedt is a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church in Clyde, NC.  He briefly served as the lead congregational coordinator in his congregation before being elected to his current chapter position.  Dr. Toedt is a board-certified family physician, a Commander in the U.S. Public Health Service, and he is Chief of Staff of Cherokee Indian Hospital in Cherokee, NC.  He is married to wife Dominique and they have 2 sons, Matthew (8) and Daniel (4).

A Caring Organization Like No Other

As a fraternal benefit society, Thrivent Financial for Lutherans is a not-for-profit membership organization that joins with its members to support their communities, congregations and individuals in need through volunteer activities and gifting programs.

Helping Communities and Congregations

Chapter Activities -- $141,859
From holding a community-wide auction to raise funds for a child with cancer, to building a handicap-accessible play area at a local park, our members make a difference every day through our chapter system.   In 2006, there were 114 service and fund-raising activities conducted by the Central Blue Ridge NC Chapter, resulting in 16,414 volunteer hours.   Funds raised by these local teams totaled $89,394, which were combined with $52,465 from Thrivent Financial to multiply the good we can do together.

Giving Plus¸Program - $288,363
Through this program, Thrivent Financial members can give to Lutheran educational institutions or outreach ministry organizations and have those financial gifts supplemented by Thrivent Financial for Lutherans.

29 Lutheran organizations received $288,363 in supplemental funds based on contributions from 1,903 Thrivent Financial for Lutherans members in our chapter and other chapters throughout the state.

Thrivent Builds with Habitat for Humanity -- $730,600
Through our alliance with Habitat for Humanity, Thrivent Financial for Lutherans contributed $613,014 to support Thrivent Builds projects in the Southeast Region. Our members raised an additional $117,586 and committed 19,174 volunteer hours to help build 10 homes in the region. Nationally, more than 300 families in need built their new homes with Thrivent Financial members and other volunteers through Thrivent Builds. In addition, members volunteered on 38 Thrivent Builds Worldwide trips in which they traveled to build with Habitat affiliates in the United States and abroad while experiencing the local culture.

For 2007, our Central and Asheville Habitat for Humanity received a build grant.  Ground breaking took place on May 22 and the house is now closed in.  Finish work will be completed in July. Abiding Savior, Emmanuel Lutheran, Church of the Nativity, and St. Mark's are the four participating congregations.  Also, our Henderson County Habitat affiliate has completed the rough-in of a house for a Lutheran family through sponsorship and a blitz build conducted by Grace Lutheran Church.

2006 Thrivent Financial for Lutherans Outreach through the Central Blue Ridge NC Chapter and other area Thrivent Financial members totaled $1,160,822

Support from the Thrivent Financial for Lutherans Foundation -- $612,630
