Planning a Care in Congregations® Activity
The Care in Congregations® program gives you a unique opportunity to make a meaningful difference in your congregation and its associated Lutheran institutions through fund-raising and hands-on service activities, such as painting the church hall or raising funds for new choir robes. Care in Congregations® is a simple four-step process: 1. Plan - identify a need, form a congregational service team and discuss with congregational coordinators and congregation. 2. Request - request funds and approval online at www.thrivent.com 3. Conduct - plan and conduct the activity involving as many people as possible. 4. Report - report volunteer hours, member attendance, total attendance, net funds raised, total expenses incurred and total households actively involved. Funds are sent to the congregation and the Receipts, Funds Raised and Expenses Report is submitted to the chapter leadership board.
Reminder to Use 2007 Funds
Make sure your congregation uses the Care in Congregations funds available for use in 2007. If this money is not used it will be lost, as it cannot be carried over into the next year. Many congregations in our chapter have not begun to use their alloted funds this year. This money can be used for materials for hands-on projects conducted by service teams like landscaping, painting or repairing your church building or to supplement fund-raising to buy new hymnals, playground equipment, or other needs for the congregation. There are also funds available for Care in Communities activities through the chapter board. Thrivent Financial provides funding to community service teams to conduct fund-raising activities and/or hands-on service activities to help individuals, families and qualified not-for-profit organizations. These funds will not carry over into the next year either, so if you know of someone that Thrivent could benefit, please apply for these funds through the chapter board.
Thrivent Builds/Habitat for Humanity Updates
Come see the beautiful Habitat house that Thrivent and area Lutherans helped build. There will be a Keypassing and Dedication Ceremony at the 2007 Thrivent-Lutheran Asheville Area Habitat house on Sunday, October 28, 2007, 3:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. The house is located in the Enka Hills subdivision in West Asheville on Warren Haynes Dr. off Sand Hill Road. There is a map to the subdivision at http://www.ashevillehabitat.org/where_we_build. Our chapter will be applying for funding for a Henderson County Thrivent Builds Habitat house for 2008. If you or members in your congregation currently volunteer for Habitat or support Habitat financially, work with your Thrivent Builds champion to keep records of the involvement. Support of Habitat for Humanity will help our chances of receiving funds for a house in 2008.
Thank You for All You Do for Your Congregation!
Your chapter board would like to thank you for all you do for your congregation and community by volunteering as a congregational coordinator. Without you, your congregation would not be able to receive and multiply funds from Thrivent Likewise, without a full board, our chapter will not qualify for the funding that helps people and our community. Elections are coming up and we have several open positions that must be filled. If you or anyone in your congregation would like to be part of a group of caring people with the opportunity to decide how best to use funding that benefits people in need and your community, please contact me (contact info inside this newsletter), or another board member. You need to be a Thrivent member and have 5 to 15 hours per month volunteer time, depending on the position.
