Lutherans in Southeast Reach Out to Biloxi Katrina Survivors

Did you know that 160 Lutherans will be building houses with Habitat for Humanity for Katrina victims Oct. 21-27?  With $40,000 in disaster funds for building materials from the Care in Regions program, the fraternal office of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans for NC,SC, and GA is organizing the trip.  Participants will spend a week on construction of new homes, working with Lutherans who care about others, and changing the lives of families they help.

A Caring Organization Like No Other

Below is a list, though not comprehensive, of the activities/projects that have been conducted thus far in 2007.  Some are Care Abounds in Communities and some are Care in Congregations.  Thanks to all of those who have helped in any way to be the hands and the feet of Christ.  Contact the Central Blue Ridge Board or your Congregational Coordinator if you would like to become involved or find out more about your fraternal programs.

Dental hygeine kits for the needy; fleece quilts for hospital pediatrics; shelter meals (made and delivered); food and heating for the disadvantaged; support fo the Brasstown Ringers ministry; a family whose baby was born prematurely and has required extensive medical expenses; Habitat for Humanity (in three counties); VBS outreach; playground equipment; mission support- supporting youth to attend various trips this summer; support of youth for youth gatherings; a walkway for a church; keyboard for a church; visibility project; choir robes; scholarship fund support; hunger coalition.

If you know of a ministry or person in need, contact one of your Congregational Coordinators or one of the Central Blue Ridge Chapter board members.

IMAGINE what a difference you can make!

Imagine yourself as part of a group of caring people with the opportunity to decide how best to use funding that benefits people in need and your community. Imagine being able to increase the impact that money has through community involvement, awareness, additional funds raised and the caring work of many hands.

Chapter leaders with the Central Blue Ridge NC Chapter of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans do just that with the Care Abounds in Communities® program! And with chapter leader elections just around the corner, the time to get involved is NOW! Our chapter will have several leadership opportunities for 2008. The only requirements are: being a Thrivent Financial member; a desire to help people; and five to 15 hours per month volunteer time (depending on the position).

We very much need you on the chapter leadership board--without a full board, our chapter will not qualify for the funding that helps people and our community. Help us take full advantage of this unique opportunity to significantly impact our community and contact Wes Yeko (wesyeko@hotmail.com) or Layne Kasischke (laynekaz@bellsouth.net) or your Congregational Coordinator to find out more or add your name to the election ballot.

If serving on the chapter leadership board does not work for you but you'd like to be involved or volunteer in some capacity, there are many other volunteer opportunities, both short-term and longer-term, available as well. Please contact us and we'll describe how you can make a difference through the Thrivent chapter system in a way that fits into your schedule.

2007 Habitat Thrivent/Lutheran House

The kickoff for the 2007 Thrivent Build with Habitat for Humanity build in our area was Tuesday, May 22. The construction of this particular home is the result of combined efforts of two organizations—Thrivent Financial for Lutherans® and Habitat for Humanity® International.  They have joined forces in an unprecedented alliance to not only build walls, but to build community as well. There are four local Lutheran Churches participating in this build - Abiding Savior, Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Lutheran Church of the Nativity, and St. Mark's Lutheran Church. 75% of the funding for this project comes from Thrivent, 10% from the participating churches and the rest from Habitat. All participating churches are providing volunteers as well.  Dedication is planned for October 28th at 3PM in the Enka Hills Subdivision.  All are invited to attend!
