| Thrivent Builds-Habitat for Humanity House for Henderson County |
Thrivent Builds with Habitat for Humanity is a four-year, $105-million alliance between Thrivent Financial for Lutherans® and Habitat for Humanity® International designed to help provide a “hand up” to people who lack decent shelter. This national program will see local benefits in 2008 when the Henderson County Habitat Affiliate and the Central Blue Ridge NC Chapter of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans complete a home in partnership with low-income families in the Hendersonville area. Locally, our chapter and the Henderson County Habitat Affiliate will help with fund-raising and homebuilding. Lutherans and Thrivent Financial members will be needed to volunteer on the build site. Volunteer opportunities for this home will be announced over the next several months. Being selected to build a Thrivent Builds home is quite an honor. Thank you to Ed Hauser, the Thrivent Builds Chapter Specialist, and the Henderson County Habitat Affiliate for the hard work and dedication that went into putting the application together for this home.
| Care In Communities Activities |
Some of the Care in Communities projects that your chapter has provided supplemental funding for over the last few months include a sloppy joe supper to benefit a handicapped boy scout troop, Taste of Hendersonville which benefits crisis services for Henderson County residents through Interfaith Assistance Ministry, school supplies for needy children in Asheville, Henderson County Hunger Walk which benefits the Hunger Coalition, a trip to the Billy Graham library, a handicap ramp, and playground equipment for Open Arms Preschool. Through Care Abounds in Communities®, any member in our chapter can organize a community service team and help others. It doesn't take a lot of time or a long-term commitment! Contact a member of our chapter leadership board as noted in this newsletter for assistance in getting started. December 20 is the last day to complete projects and submit reports to the board this year. That will be here before you know it, but you may want to be thinking of people or organizations that you could assist with a project in 2008.
Did you know our chapter has an "All Thrivent" band? This band was the entertainment for the Habitat for Humanity Shrimp Boil held in September 2007 in Macon County. The band members are Dot Tari, keyboards; Reed Layne, acoustic guitar; Joe Barber, guitar and vocals; and James Wright, bass guitar. The band played a variety of pop and country music. We are proud to say that James Wright is our board records director and the chapter board supported the shrimp boil as a Care Abounds in Communities project. Thank you to all the band members and we hope to have a chance to hear you again!
Here are two events supported by area Lutherans that you might want to add to your holiday calendar. The Brasstown Ringers Sunday, December 9, 4 p.m. First Presbyterian Church 26 Church St. Franklin, NC Donations accepted
Outdoor Nativity Sunday, December 16, 2-4 p.m. In the Chick Fil-A parking lot at Highland Square on Highway 64, Hendersonville. Mt. Pisgah Lutheran Church is presenting this nativity. There will be free refreshments.
