YOU CAN HELP MAKE IT HAPPEN
The summer SPLASH program for refugee children needs volunteers to assist with the eight week program. If you can assist a week or a day during June and July, contact Cindy Ott at Lutheran Family Services or email her at cindy.ott@lfscarolinas.org. You can also help by making a contribution to the program fund raiser. Make checks payable to SPLASH and mail % Reformation Lutheran CHurch, 1118 Union Street, Columbia, SC 29201.
HELP IN APPLYING FOR SERVICE TEAM FUNDS
Contact: Mark Cerneglia Our Chapter has developed a packet to help all who plan Care Abounds in Communities projects and seek funding to assist with these projects. A packet will be mailed to each congregation and to prior service teams where contact mailing information is available. The packet will include:
A Checklist of Ten Steps to help insure the partnership required for funding approval. Working Guidelines for funding as described by Thrivent and those guiding our Chapter's decisions. A list of all of the forms you need and their numbers: Request for Funding Questionnaire (#20885F) Reporting Activity Involvement (#20885G) Reporting Receipts and Funds Raised (#23575)
As more and more people request funds, it is important that we all know what can be most helpful in getting the funds approved. We hope we have provided you with good and helpful information. If there are ways we can be more helpful, please let us know.
Funding provided through Care Abounds in Communities®
Chapters of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans are organized geographically and bring together members to help others and help their community. Through the Care Abounds in Communities® program, Thrivent Financial provides funding to members like you who form community service teams to conduct fund-raising activities and/or hands-on service activities to help individuals, families and qualified not-for-profit organizations. Contact a member of our chapter leadership board for assistance in getting started. We will do what we can to work with you.
BLEST BE THE TIE THAT BINDS
The old camp song says "The more we get together, the happier we'll be." A hymn title says it with "Blest be the tie that binds." One of the joys of Thrivent members has been the opportunity to come together several times during the year for fellowship and sharing. We gather, usually, around food and an entertaining or informational program. Sometimes congregational members attend events together. There are often 80-100 people attending. It is a great time to meet others and to enjoy a nice evening -- and even sometimes to contribute toward a special project. We are planning for more events in 2007. The first event is planned for April 30th with dinner and entertainment. Save the date and watch for the event card with details. If you have questions now, please contact one of the Board members. MARK THE DATE: APRIL 30th at 6:30 p.m. WHERE: St. Andrew's Lutheran Church Fellowship Hall WHAT: Member event with entertainment by a "Forgiven" a band from Mt. Herman Lutheran Church.
CONGREGATIONAL COORDINATORS ENJOY DINNER
Contact: Len Carlson How to help your congregation Did you know that Thrivent Financial for Lutherans has a program called Care in Congregations® where funding is provided to Thrivent Financial members to conduct fund-raising and/or hands-on service activities to benefit your congregation or its related Lutheran institutions? In fact, Thrivent Financial members are encouraged to use the funds to help the congregation in its ministry to the community.
If you see a need in your congregation that could be helped through this funding, please contact a Thrivent Financial congregational coordinator in your congregation. If you don't know who your three congregational coordinators are, please contact a member of our chapter leadership board as noted in this newsletter, and he/she will help you get in touch with a coordinator. On February 12, Len Carlson hosted for us an appreciation dinner for the congregational coordinators. The meal was great -- as usual -- and prepared by the Lutheran Men of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church. Len provided a helpful update for the coordinators about several items. If you need information, please be in touch with him directly at 803-691-1790 or lseaglesnest1@bellsouth.net. The information included:
Using Care in Congregation's Funds These funds are available to every congregation through the coordinators and, depending on the size of the congregation, is $1300-1600 a year. The service team of coordinators and the congregation identifies a project or projects, raises funds, and then applies to Thrivent (online) to send them supplement funds.
Using Care Abounds in Communities Funds These funds are in addition to the congregational funds. They are available only through the chapter leadership board and can be used for almost any service project for anyone or anything except a congregation (because they get the funds in care in congregations). There are special forms and guidelines by Thrivent and the chapter for accessing these funds.
Please be in touch if you need assistance with any of this information.
Contact: Frank Anderson at 803-799-4992 Join Hands day is a great way for youth and adults to work together to make a difference in the community. Our Chaper Youth Director has set two dates when groups can participate in this project. Watch for details about the events and contact Frank for more information. For now:
