Midlands SC Chapter, May/June Newsletter
GREETINGS FROM YOUR CHAPTER LEADERSHIP BOARD Your Chapter Leadership Board has been busy at work on your behalf these past months. We have developed a packet of resources to send to Congregational Coordinators with tips and a checklist to help with requesting funds for Community Service Teams. We anticipated the packets being in the mail early in the year, but by the time you receive this news, your congregational coordinators should have the information.
So far we have used about half of the funds we have available to us this year for hands-on or fund raising activities. It is still not too late to organize a team and make a request for funds for a special activity to address a special need. This is one of the big things the chapter board does -- make decisions about how to spend the funds allotted to us each year. We would love to hear from you, even to discuss how to make your activity possible. Remember a few important guidelines: A service team of 6 Thrivent households, activity approved BEFORE you begin the work, funding is based on 1:3, track hours, number of volunteers, and costs. We will be glad to work with you.
Thanks to the service teams making requests so far this year. We hope all of your activities have gone well. We are very pleased when you provide prompt reports with at least $3 raised for every $1 we are able to give to you. We also love those volunteer hours -- hours for planning, phone calling, running errands, as well as implementing the activity. It all counts. Keep those records and don't miss a minute when you report to us.
Our member events and communications continue to go well. If you have not attended events in the past, we hope you will plan to join us in the future. This is our second newsletter this year and we anticipate another two before the end of the year. If there is something you would like to know about, please let us know and we will do what we can to include that in a future issue.
Our regular meetings are the third Monday of each month. We prefer to make decisions at the meetings. Get those requests in to any one of the leadership board members. Remember to check the web site, including the site for our chapter, for updates and information.

JOIN HANDS DAY #1 HUGE SUCCESS!, JHD #2 REPORT PENDING
The afternoon was perfect, the task before us much needed. The Lutheran Family Services Refugee House at St. Andrews Lutheran Church needed a little TLC in the yard department. Over 12 intrepid youth and 5 adults got their hands a little dirty as they pruned, planted, mulched, watered, and raked away. They finished up the afternoon with PIZZA! This was the work of the Midlands South Carolina Chapter of Thrivent in our first JOINHANDS DAYS of this year. Drive by and see the Chapter at work! Pastor Frank Anderson coordinated this event for the chapter. Now, (if this reaches you in time) join in for the second JOIN HANDS DAY on June 10, 2007 at 2 pm. The project is to help spruce up the Campus Ministry Center at USC. Meet at 728 Pickens Street at 2 pm. Once again the event will end as participants enjoy....you guessed it....PIZZA! at 4:30 pm. Bring rakes, gloves, shovels, etc!
Contact Pastor Christine Stoxen for details 803-736-0661.
GOOD FOOD, GOOD MUSIC, GOOD FELLOWSHIP, GOOD CHAPTER
On Monday evening, the 30th of April, the Midland's South Carolina Chapter hosted one of several events during the year. This Thrivent membership appreciation dinner was held at St. Andrews's Lutheran Church. The Forgiven band from Mt.Herman Lutheran Church entertained us with their praise and worship music. Good Shepherd's Mens group catered the dinner. Total attendance was seventy-five (75). There was plenty of room for more, so please try to come to our next dinner on July the 9th. You will be glad you did -- and so will we. It is a great time for us to get to know one another.

ATTENTION CONGREGATIONAL COORDINATORS
Please check the Thrivent website and see that your Coordinator list is up to date. Each congregation needs to have 3 Coordinators listed. Also have you applied for the Care in Congregations funds available to your congregation? Each congregation is entitled to $1300 or $1600 this year, as it has been in the past, depending on the size of the congregation. It is important that you apply for this money as soon as possible and not wait until the end of the year. These funds are available for fundraising or hands on activities for the congregation. This may be applied for through any kind of supplemental funds on a 1 to 1 basis and used for any need within your congregation or for others, if you choose. If you have any questions feel free to call: Contact: Len Carlson, Congregational Service Team Director: 803/691-1790 eaglesnest1@bellsouth.net
ATTENTION ALL KNITTERS OR CROCHETERS!
Want to make a child feel loved and cared for? Then join other members of your chapter who are busy knitting or crocheting sweaters for needy children all over the world. Don’t be intimidated by the word “sweater”. This sweater is very easy to make – two large T’s made by knitting or purling a row. Completed T’s are then hand stitched together to create the sweater. It’s that simple. They are crafted from 4-ply, washable cotton yarn and are all made from the same pattern. This is because great differences in design or materials could create problems for the kids. Using a variety of colors to mix and match make each sweater unique and original. Our chapter is doing this activity through Guideposts magazine and they will distribute the sweaters to needy children all over the world. That’s the hard part – being sure they reach children who really need them! Our chapter will purchase the yarn and mail sweaters to Guideposts when we have a sizable amount. Individual names as well as Thrivent Financial for Lutherans Midlands SC Chapter will be included with each mailing. There is no time frame – you can work at your own pace. If interested contact Dot Mathias @ 788-3095 for instructions and yarn. Let’s spread love, God’s love, from our knitting/crochet needles to children all over the world!!!
HOW TO HELP YOUR CONGREGATION Did you know that Thrivent Financial for Lutherans has a program called Care in Congregations® where funding is provided to Thrivent Financial members to conduct fund-raising and/or hands-on service activities to benefit your congregation or its related Lutheran institutions? In fact, Thrivent Financial members are encouraged to use the funds to help the congregation in its ministry to the community. If you see a need in your congregation that could be helped through this funding, please contact a Thrivent Financial congregational coordinator in your congregation. If you don't know who your three congregational coordinators are, please contact a member of our chapter leadership board as noted in this newsletter, and he/she will help you get in touch with a coordinator.
This newsletter is written for you by volunteer leaders of your local Thrivent Financial for Lutherans chapter, and any views expressed are those of the writer. For questions, comments or to learn more about chapter activities in your area, please contact one of your chapter leaders, who are listed on our Web site at: www.thrivent.com/members.
