Know Your Congregational Coordinator(s) Each congregation is asked to name three congregational coordinators each year, with one as the Lead coordinator. These are key people to connect with the chapter and share information with you. Coordinators must be Thrivent members. They are also the key to your congregation receiving the funds (ranging from $1300 - $1600) available each year to every congregation for special project(s) you choose (in your congregation or the community). Coordinators are to work with the congregation and other Thrivent members to get involvement in projects.
Ask your congregation about its coordinators. The list by congregation as it appears on the Thrivent site for the congregations in our chapter follows. Congregations update their list and make corrections by contacting a member of the Board, since any changes need to be approved by the chapter leadership board.
Please help us get your list up to date for 2009. Check with others in your congregation and be sure you have all three coordinators named and that the information we have for them is accurate and up-to-date.

| WEB SITE HAS NEW LOOK -- TRY IT YOU MIGHT LIKE IT |
The Thrivent web site has a new look. Check it out. You can find information about your accounts and about the chapter and contact your representative. The forms to request and report Care Abounds in Communities projects can be printed from the site. You can visit "Lutherans on Line" and find a daily Bible reading, a free send-a-card service, weather, recipes, fun and games, genealogy, and much more. During 2009 our new Board member for communications will work on our chapter site to update it and make it more friendly.
| MIDLANDS CHAPTER SUPPORTS PROJECTS |
During 2008 the Midlands Chapter supported the following service teams and projects with about $18,000. Homeless meals by Christ Lutheran Church $1600 Happy Feet (shoes for needy children) by Chapter $1200 Camp Discovery $1000 Prosperity Tornados by Chapter $1000 Josh Jacobs medical needs by Living Springs $2500 Clay Dixon medical needs by Good Shepherd $2500 SPLASH camp for refugees by Reformation $1600 Dental Supplies for Tanzania Team by Good Shepherd $1600 Rice Home Golf Tournament $1000 Knitting Project by Dot Mathias $ 100 Inasmuch Ramp project by Good Shepherd $1000 Fix up for Spanish MIssion $1200 Dasher Dinner $1200 Pre School project by St. James, Sumter $ 250 Angel House support by Christ the King $ 945 The Chapter can help you support special projects and meet special needs which you identify in your community, for individuals, and for other non-profits. These are funds given by Thrivent to our chapter to carry out Care Abounds in Communities activities. These funds are in addition to the Care in Congregations funds made available to every congregation. The Care Abounds in Communities dollars are for either fund raising events (which we supplement every $3 raised with $1) or hands-on service activities (support is based on expense receipts). There are specific guidelines which must be followed by us and by Thrivent in order to comply with the IRS rules and regulations for fraternal groups. Our chapter has developed a packet with the forms and guidelines to assist you in the process of applying for these funds. Among the key guidelines are:
1. There must be a service team of at least 6 households of Thrivent members. 2. These funds are NOT available for a congregation--checks cannot be payable to a congregation. 3. These funds can be requested to help a community, individual, or non-profit (not a congregation.) 4. Maximum of $1600 for fund raising or hands-on activity. (Maximum of $5000 for fund raisers for individuals or families in need.) 5. Complete the Request for Funding Questionnaire (form 20885F) PRIOR to beginning the project. 6. Make sure Thrivent is visible in both the promotion and implementation of the project. 7. A service team may request funding for up to two projects in a six month period. 8. The funding is a 3:1 ratio (i.e. $1600 requires at least $4800 deposited with the chapter). 9. New projects may take precedence over projects supported for three or more years 10. Chapter funding is a partnership for service. The chapter/Thrivent are not corporate sponsors.
Care Abounds in Communities Hands On Activity Funding for a hands on activity is based on the project expenses (buying paint; buying food for volunteers; buying shoes for needy children). Guidelines are similiar to those for fund raising activities.
Requests for funding are considered by the Chapter Leadership Board at it's meetings -- generally the third Monday of the month. Submit requests to any Board member. Check the web site for form needed.
In addition to the Care projects, the chapter supports members and congregational coordinators. In 2008 there were three member events: one to highlight disaster response, one to support Boy's Farm, one for the 2009 election. The coordinator's event was a breakfast to which clergy and office staff were invited.
Operating funds helped us provide a meal for the youth participating in Bishop's School at Southern Seminary and support for the LAMM Harvest Hope project. There were also two Join Hands Day events -- one supporting Boy's Farm and the other providing book bags to children in SPLASH.
Our Chapter gathers about three times a year for food, fun, and fellowship. These events provide complimentary meals and usually door prizes. We are always seeking ideas for entertainment and/or programs. Contact a chapter leader if you have an idea. Usually about 80-100 people gather for these events. We would like to have you attend. Watch for special mailings announcing the details of each event. If you do not receive a mailing, please be in touch with a chapter leader.
