MEMBER EVENTS DURING 2008 -- SAVE THE DATES
The Chapter Leadership Board has established the working dates for member events during the 2008 year. We hope you will plan to attend all of the events. Mark your calendars now. Thrivent members will receive postcards with event details prior to each event. You will be asked to make reservations so we can prepare adequately for all those who will attend. If you know people who could benefit by the Financial Services of Thrivent, we encourage you to bring them with you as our guests. If you have ideas for programs or entertainment, please share those with a member of the Leadership Board. MAY 22, 2008 AT REFORMATION LUTHERAN at 6:30 p.m. will focus on Diaster Preparedness as the Hurricane season approaches. Come and enjoy a disaster themed event as we consider how to THRIVE even in DISASTER. The food choices might be a little imaginative. Will hurricanes and blizzards be among the choices? Someone suggested chicken little. Come enjoy the evening as we consider this important topic. You will hear first hand, eye witness, first reponder accounts about the Prosperity tornadoes. You can increase your own awareness about disaster preparedness. Make a contribution to Lutheran Disaster Response. That contribution will get your name in the drawing for a ready made (except for your personal items) emergency preparedness kit. Please call 782-3500 to sign up.
AUGUST14, 2008 AT CHRIST LUTHERAN (Denny Terrace). Featuring Boy's Farm of Newberry. Details announced this summer. This will be an opportunity to help prepare the boys for school.
NOVEMBER 10, 2008 GOOD SHEPHERD LUTHERAN will be the annual election event.
BREAKFAST MEETING A SUCCESS
In the early spring, the chapter hosted a breakfast buffet meeting for congregational coordinators, pastors, and church secretaries. There was a good representation by the pastors and by the coordinators. The breakfast was wonderful, complete with shrimp and grits, pastries, specialty coffee, and much more. During the brief program, chapter leaders shared information about making requests for Care Abounds in Communities funds and encouraged all congregational coordinators to be sure that their congregations use the $1300-1600 of Care in Congregations funds available to them. If a congregation does not intend to use their funds to benefit the congregation, they can use to benefit an outreach ministry that the church is involved in. Stay tuned for more breakfast meetings in the future.
CONGREGATIONS GIVEN OPPORTUNITY TO ORDER FREE SUPPLIES
Compliments of the chapter leadership board, those congregations who were represented at the breakfast meeting had the opportunity to oder a supply of napkins or cups to use in their congregational ministries. Ten of the 24 congregations in our chapter placed orders. The supplies have arrived and are being delivered to the congregations on behalf of the chapter by a new Thrivent Financial Representative, Tom Henderson. Please welcome him when he contacts your congregation.
LEADERSHIP BOARD REVIEWS AND APPROVES FUNDING REQUESTS
An important part of the monthly meetings of the Chapter Leadership Board is reviewing any requests for Care Abounds in Communities projects submitted to the chapter and then approving funding as it is appropriate and available. Early in the year we received a number of requests and have responded to those as we were able. These are projects through service teams related to our chapter. They are our hands and feet involved in helping others. For 2008 we supported two medical need projects for children. We have helped Josh Jacobs and Clay Dixon and their families with medical costs, each with $2500.
We have provided paint and supplies for the Spanish mission, Manantial de Vida, for a hands on project to paint and repair their facilities, up to $1200.
We are supporting the weekly meals for the homeless which are served in downtown Columbia by Christ Lutheran Church throughout the year, up to $1600.
We are purchasing supplies for the South Carolina Synod team to take and use on the mission trip to Tanzania, up to $1600.
We are supporting the SPLASH program for refugee and immigrant children at Reformation Lutheran Church, up to $1600.
We have set aside funding for projects scheduled for later this year: Dasher Dinner for Campus Ministry at USC in October, up to $1000 Camp Discovery, up to $1000 Rice Home Golf Tournament, up to $1000 A Happy Feet shoe project to purchase back to school shoes for needy children, up to $1200.
Thank you for your participation. As members of Thrivent Financial, which is non-profit, funds which would normally go to taxes are used by the chapters for these service ministries. The chapter and Thrivent Financial report to the IRS about these chapter activites, along with volunteer hours served and the number of volunteers involved. We are grateful for the tax status which allows us to carry out these important ministries.

MAKE A DIFFERENCE -- BE A CHAPTER LEADER
As a member of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans, you are a part of one of nearly 1,400 groups, or chapters, of Thrivent Financial members. Your current chapter is Midlands South Carolina Chapter. The chapter system provides opportunities for members to "make a difference" by helping others through fund-raising or service activities. It also is an integral part of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans' mission and vision because it helps maximize the good that we do for others. As chapter members, we help fulfill the "caring for others" portion of Thrivent Financial's mission: "Thrivent Financial for Lutherans is a faith-based membership organization called to improve the quality of life of its members, their families, and their communities by providing unparalleled solutions that focus on financial security, wellness, and caring for others."
In addition, we have the opportunity to play an important role in Thrivent Financial's vision: "Our vision is to be the organization that Lutherans, Lutheran congregations and Lutheran institutions seek first when pursuing their financial goals. More than creating financial solutions, we add the unique capability of enabling Lutherans to demonstrate their care and concern for others."
Through use of our chapter Care programs, we are able to "demonstrate care and concern for others." If you would be interested, or even willing, to consider being a chapter board member, please contact anyone on the chapter board, especially Linda Derrick who serves as the vice president. Linda will be seeking people for our board for next year. Several terms expire and we would like to consider YOU.
Thrivent Financial and our chapter participate in the annual Join Hands Day. JOIN HANDS DAY is a national day of volunteering sponsored by America's fraternal benefit societies, including Thrivent Financial for Lutherans. It encourages youth and adults to come together to identify, plan and conduct activities to improve their communities. Last year, youth and adult members conducted nearly 3,000 activities across the country. Please contact Pastor Frank Anderson for more information.
HOW TO HELP YOUR CONGREGATION
Did you know that Thrivent Financial for Lutherans has a program called Care in Congregations® where funding is provided to Thrivent Financial members to conduct fund-raising and/or hands-on service activities to benefit your congregation or its related Lutheran institutions? In fact, Thrivent Financial members are encouraged to use the funds to help the congregation in its ministry to the community. If you see a need in your congregation that could be helped through this funding, please contact a Thrivent Financial congregational coordinator in your congregation. If you don't know who your three congregational coordinators are, please contact a member of our chapter leadership board as noted in this newsletter, and he/she will help you get in touch with a coordinator. Contact person is Len Carlson.
REMEMBER: Invite your friends to consider Thrivent Financial for Lutherans. The services are many and can fill many needs for our members.
