Thrivent/Habitat Build 2012
For the fourth consecutive year our Greenville Chapter will team up with Habitat for Humanity to build a home for a local family. It will probably be in Abigail Springs where we built last year. It will probably start in late August like last year. It will probably be funded about like last year - 55% from Thrivent, 35% from Habitat, and the remaining 10% (about $11,000) from our local chapter. After having coordinated Thrivent's effort for three years, Linda Stazer is relinquishing this job to Keith Jones. We look forward to our members pitching in on this project with the same enthusiasm they have shown in the past. For further information contact Keith Jones at 864-877-2842 or keith.jones9747@gmail.com.
Our First Care Abounds in Communities Project for 2012 - a Spring Habitat Build
Our Chapter has made a $1,500 Grant to the Golden Strip Coalition of Churches to purchase windows and doors for their Spring 2012 Habitat for Humanity Build. The Golden Strip Coalition of Churches is an Ecumenical Christian Coalition of Churches active in the Mauldin, Simpsonville and Fountain Inn areas. Each year they work to raise $62,000 and hundreds of man days of work to build a home for a family in Greenville County who has struggled to afford decent housing. Through Habitat for Humanity these families work with Partner Groups like GSCC to build their homes. It is a hand up not a hand out, and promotes long term homeownership. The Build will start on April 21st and finish on May 19th. The GSCC will need carpenters, painters, landscapers and volunteers who are just willing to learn. They also need food donations and people who will make food during the build days. April 23rd will be Thrivent Day at the Build and scheduling permitting, we will install those windows and doors. If you would like to volunteer, either on Thrivent Day or another day of the Build, please contact Linda Stazer at 243-2868 to get a copy of the proposed Build Schedule.
Your Thrivent Choice Gift Counts
Giving back makes an important impact in people's lives. Last year alone, Thrivent Financial provided more than $100 million to help congregations, communities and individuals in need. Members who own Thrivent Financial Products make this support possible. Thrivent Choice lets you recommend where some of Thrivent's charitable outreach funds go by directing Choice Dollars. Eligibility to help direct Choice Dollars is based on a benefit member's involvement in Thrivent Financial - via their level of product ownership (life insurance, health insurance and annuities) or Thrivent volunteer leadership. If you are eligible and have not yet participated, please consider doing so now. In 2011 members in the Greenville County Chapter of Thrivent directed 19,783 Choice Dollars to Lutheran affiliated charities of their choice. Many directed Choice Dollars to their church, while others directed theirs to other agencies, such as Lutheran World Relief or our Newberry College. But less than 20% of eligible members directed their Choice Dollars last year, so this total could be much larger if more eligible members will take advantage of this opportunity.
If you haven't yet begun to direct your Choice Dollars to a recipient of your choice, please log in at Thrivent.com/thriventchoice. Follow the directions there to begin using this generous program. Alternatively you can call Thrivent at 800-847-4835, and when prompted say "Thrivent Choice". When prompted again say "Choice Dollars" (providing your social security number is helpful, but not required).
2012 Goals Set for Our Greenville County Chapter
The following Goals were set for 2012 by the Greenville County Chapter of Thrivent: 1. Identify the causes, activities and programs that will lead to greater member and non-member participation in our Chapter.
2. Create greater visibility about what our Chapter does during the year.
3. Create opportunities for members and non-members to interact with our local Thrivent Financial Representatives, Dennis Barry and Melanie Hendrix.
4. Help identify potential Thrivent Financial Representatives for the Greenville office.
We would appreciate your ideas or strategies to help advance these goals. We would especially appreciate information on potential Representatives. In this time when many people are looking for work, this may be a win-win situation. Contact Linda Stazer at 243-2868 if you can help.

Thrivent Financial for Lutherans members are organized into local groups, called chapters, to plan and conduct charitable, social and educational activities. Becoming involved with your local chapter is a great way to connect with others and invest in your community and congregation. How Do Chapters Work? Each chapter is led by a chapter leadership board consisting of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans members, elected by members in the chapter. The board is responsible for promoting and supporting programs and activities. The board also manages and administers the Care Abounds in Communities chapter program locally.
Through this program, fund-raisers and service activities are conducted by chapter service teams, made up of a group of Thrivent Financial members who come together to help an individual, family in need, or a not-for-profit organization.
In addition, the board appoints congregational advocates for each Lutheran congregation in the chapter.
For more information about your chapter, how you can get involved and how the chapter can help with your volunteer activity, locate your local chapter. If you are interested in becoming a chapter leader, please let us know by completing the Leadership Interest Form.
Congregational Advocates Needed
In our Greenville County Chapter of Thrivent, several of our Lutheran churches do not yet have at least two Congregational Advocates. In this role, you'll be able to: * Build relationships with Thrivent Financial members, congregational leaders and Thrivent Financial representatives. * Better understand the needs and ministries of your congregation. * Identify and offer Thrivent Financial charitable, social and educational resources to meet your congregation's needs. Please consider becoming a Thrivent Congregational Advocate in your church. For further information contact Alison Patrick at 864-630-0143 (al2001@charter.net).
* We are a faith-based membership organization. * Our purpose is to strengthen Christian communities by helping members be wise with money and inspiring them to live generously.
