Cape Fear River Chapter, INVITATION TO EVENTS
WHAT YOU CAN DO TO HELP IN THE COMMUNITY

You are invited to attend any of the events that churches in our chapter are hosting. These are community events and benefit persons or other non-profit groups outside of the church. Your support helps the event results blossom whether it is for hunger, warmth, or illness. This is what Jesus directed us to do. So participate in the following events as you are able and support the people being helped.

LUTHERAN CHURCH OF RECONCILIATION is ingathering food for Mother Hubbard’s Cupboard which is a food pantry on N 5th street in downtown Wilmington. On May 8 and 9 they will collect food in a container in front of the Harris Teeter Supermarket at Porters Neck. When you do your shopping, buy a few extra cans or boxes of food for the pantry.

The ST MATTHEW’S LUTHERAN CHURCH Men’s group is holding a “Pig Pickin” on June 6th for a high school girl in the church who is seriously ill and the family has used up all their insurance allotment. Miss Hillary is a student at Laney High School and in need of all the help that this community can give.  Come on out for this pig–pickin with trimmings and support the Men’s effort and this young woman’s family. They are hoping to raise $6000. Call the church for further details.

HANDS ON ACTIVITIES

ST PAUL has asked for $500 to buy materials to make blankets for Linus Project. That group provides blankets for children in threatened situations, accidents, fire, illnesses, family difficulties. St Paul has been helping to make blankets for a long time.

A group of women at LUTHERAN CHURCH OF RECONCILIATION is receiving $300 for yarn to make Prayer Shawls for people in strained situations - illness, hospitalized, loss of loved one, etc. They work on this year around.

SAINT PETER Needlers group is to receive $200 for yarn to make lap robes which they distribute to the Veterans Nursing Home. They also ask if anyone has washable yarn to contribute, they will gladly accept it. This is a year around effort for the women and obtaining yarn is ongoing.

JOIN HANDS DAY
JOIN HANDS DAY occurs May 2. If you were able to participate we thank you. Plantings were put in some of the garden areas at the Lower Cape Fear Hospice in Wilmington. The patients, their families, and the staff are most grateful for the help in improving the grounds.

FUNDS AVAILABLE TO HELP OTHERS

If you like working with others and have a desire to reach out to those in need, Thrivent Financial for Lutherans can help. Funding is available for members to purchase materials for hands-on service activities benefiting individuals, families or communities.

So, if you are handy with a hammer, love landscaping, notice that sewing or knitting makes you smile, or you have another talent to share with others, why not partner with other Thrivent Financial members to make an impact in your community?

For example, a wheelchair ramp is so much more than wood and nails. For a wheelchair user, a ramp represents accessibility to life outside the house — to community, friends and family — and even to living independently.

Building a wheelchair ramp is only one example of the impact a little teamwork can have on someone's life. Can you think of other needs in your community and other ways you might be able to make an impact? Call your chapter leadership board for more information.
