| Care Abounds In Communities Disbursements |
Each year, Thrivent Financial for Lutherans allocates charitable funds to its chapters. As a fraternal benefit society Thrivent Financial for Lutherans is exempt from certain state and federal taxes. When certain products are sold, the taxes that Thrivent would otherwise pay are used to help carry out their mission; that includes executing charitable, religious, social, educational and/or other benevolent activities through our members. Many of Thrivent's activities focus on helping others individuals and families in need, congregations or organizations via the chapter system. Chapters were allocated funds for 2011. Last year your Cape Fear River Chapter was allocated $10,200 to be distributed at a maximum rate of $1.00 for every $3.00 raised by a charitable project for those in need in our communities. There are times when our Thrivent members at our member churches do an outstanding job. In situations like this, your board needs to decide on a cap for some projects. This is done to allocate funds more fairly to benefit as many in the community as possible. In short, in the course of a year, we need to distribute funds to as many charities as possible, and project that distribution so that we can support requests that surface in that time.
In 2011 funds were distributed to the following charities: Brunswick and New Hanover County Food Pantries, Mother Hubbard's Cupboard, Wilmington Interfaith Network Hospitality House, Postage Funds to Send Care Packages to Deployed Armed Forces, North Carolina Disaster Relief Fund - (tornadoes and hurricane), Trinity Grove Nursing Home, and Upper Room Theater.
| A Case for the Congregational Advocate |
As noted above, our chapter is allocated funds to disburse to churches that are raising funds for charitable needs. But, how does your chapter learn about these fund raising events. Your church's efforts are presented to the chapter by your congregational advocate. Some of the churches in our chapter do not have a congregational advocate. This severely limits that church from getting funds to augment their charity efforts. Why would a church want to exclude them from getting additional funds for their charity drives?
The following is an appeal from our Congregational Advocate Director:
Wanted: Several Thrivent members of each Lutheran congregation to volunteer as Congregational Advocates! You need no previous experience, but as an advocate you can promote and encourage participation in Thrivent Financial’s charitable, religious, educational, social, and patriotic solutions to benefit Thrivent Financial members, the congregation, and its members. Your Cape Fear River Chapter needs your help so we may continue to grow in helping our neighbors. It is my hope that each Lutheran Church in our chapter will have at least one advocate. This will allow each congregation to have a voice in chapter affairs--to help direct where chapter funds are best spent, to assign choice dollars, to suggest seminars best suited for your congregation, and to enjoy fellowship in a worthwhile organization. Please respond to Todd Vought at 910-458-4636; barbaravought@att.net or Lois Beddard at 910-278-4242; lebeddard@ec.rr.com.
