Thrivent Builds - Building in Newburgh!
Early this year, our Thrivent chapter (Hudson Valley) was selected to sponsor and support a Thrivent Builds project in Newburgh, one of the economically hardest hit areas of our region. As part of the project, our chapter needs to raise 10% of the cost of the house. 70% of the cost will be covered by Thrivent Financial and 20% by the Newburgh Habitat for Humanity affiliate. 50% of the volunteer hours need to be provided by Lutherans and of those hours, 25% need to be provided by Thrivent members (associate or beneficial).
This project involves the demolition and rebuilding of a house at 58 Henry Avenue in Newburgh. After a long delay due to asbestos abatement problems, the house has been demolished to the foundation and the framing has begun. The start of framing had been scheduled for mid-May but due to the asbestos problems, it did not start until the end of August. The rebuilding effort will be much more intensive than initially planned and volunteers are needed from all of the Thrivent chapter congregations, especially during the week. We will be working 6 days a week if volunteers are available.
All types of skills are needed - you don’t need to be an experienced construction worker. People are needed for tasks from greeting/registering volunteers and making/serving snacks to demolition, painting, landscaping, framing.  We especially need volunteers with skills in framing, sheetrock and roofing and in particular,  licensed plumbers and electricians.
If you can help, please call Habitat in Newburgh directly at 845-568-6035 and say that you want to volunteer for the ThriventBuilds project at 58 Henry Avenue. Your help is truly needed.
Congregations are also being invited to participate in fund-raising to support the financial needs of this project.
A web site with status of the construction is available at http://thriventbuildsnewburgh.org/ and is the best place to find out what is going on. Here you can see what the house currently looks like and the architect's rendering of the finished house.

Care in Congregations® Money Still Available
Hello All! Many congregations still have not used their Care in Congregations allocation for 2006.
The good news is that EVERY congregation is entitled to Care in Congregations funds once they meet certain basic criteria set by Thrivent. The bad news is that THIS MONEY DOES NOT CARRY OVER FROM YEAR TO YEAR. So if you have not already taken advantage of this challenge grant program from Thrivent, please do so now! It is a wonderful way to multiply the ministry being carried out within your congregation. If you have questions and/or need assistance, please contact Deb Kress at kress@hvc.rr.com or 845-399-4160.

Raising Hope Around the World - 2006
Our fundraising efforts continue in this Care in Regions® project, and the time for Thanksgiving Pie Sales is growing near! Last year the efforts of various chapters helped raise over $15,000 for a hospital in Nicaragua, school in Tanzania, and AIDS orphanage in Kenya. With your help we can do even more good in 2006!
If you would like to participate, but don't know quite how to get started, please contact Deb Kress (kress@hvc.rr.com or 845-399-4160) for Instructions and Tips. Please keep in mind that the Pie Sales are NOT the only type of fundraiser that can be done for this project. Your congregation can hold a "Special Giving Sunday", local businesses can be asked to put collection cans on their counters for a couple of weeks... the possibilities are endless...  If you are holding any fundraiser to benefit the "Raising Hope" project, or if you have any questions about how to get involved, please let Deb know.
Also, please join us in Woodstock for the "Raising Hope" festival on November 18th. Musicians and artists unite for this unique event filled with a variety of music and silent auction featuring a wealth of exquisite hand crafted items. The festival will run from 1-5pm at the Colony Cafe on Rock City Road, with a special preview and chance to meet the artists at 1pm. For any questions about the "Raising Hope" festival, please contact Tobias Anderson at faithfulfolk@christwoodstock.org or 845-735-2862.
