Care Abounds in Communities (CAIC)
Show you care for your community through an exciting Thrivent Financial program called Care Abounds in Communities®. Are you trying to raise funds for a qualified not-for-profit organization (501-3B) or for an individual who is facing a financial energency. Through this program, your Hudson Valley Leadership Board can help you by supporting your fund-raising efforts. Thrivent Financial, with the approval of your Leadership Board, can supplement the funds you raise or provide funds to help you purchase supplies for hands-on service activities. Your first step is to form a community service team—a team of volunteers that conducts an activity to help individuals, families and/or qualified not-for-profit organizations. Then you can contact a member of your chapter leadership board listed above for more information and help. Applications for Care Abounds in Communities activities are available at:
                                 http://www.lutheransonline.com/hudsonvalleynychapter.
Qualifying requests are awarded on the basis 1:3 (one dollar for each three raised), subject to approval by the Hudson Valley Chapter Board. You can help make a difference for an organization or family in your community.

Thrivent Builds
Our chapter was again selected for a Thrivent Builds project in 2008 and had planned to participate in the Parmenter Street re-development project but due to complications outside our control, the building could not be started.  We will continue the Thrivent Builds project into 2009 with a house on 53 Temple Avenue in Newburgh.
This house will be framed by BOCES student and is scheduled to be delivered to the site on April 30.  After that we will need Lutheran and Thrivent member volunteers to complete interior and exterior work on the house.
Habitat Newburgh can always use volunteer help on other projects and time spent by Lutheran and Thrivent member volunteers on these projects counts towards our obligation to provide 50% of the volunteer days by Lutherans and 25% by Thrivent members.
Information about our project, including schedules, architectural rendering and directions can be found at the web site: http://www.thriventbuildsnewburg.org
Contact David Adler, 845-679-5328 or dadler@christwoodstock.org for more information.

Join Hands Day - May 2, 2009
Join hands, improve the community while having fun, and watch the power of membership grow!
We encourage you to participate in the 10th annual JOIN HANDS DAY on Saturday, May 2, 2009. This national day of volunteering is sponsored by America's fraternal benefit societies, including Thrivent Financial for Lutherans, to generate awareness about the impact of grassroots volunteerism. It encourages youth and adults to come together to identify, plan and conduct activities to improve their communities.
This year, two projects are planned:  Koinonia in Highland Lake will hold a Work Day on May 16th.  Anyone interested in helping, contact Steve Lee at Koinonia at 1-800-980-2267or email steve12743@yahoo.com.  Second activity Redeemer Lutheran Church in Kingston will hold a Work Day at TenBroeck Commons Nursing Home on May 2nd.  Anyone interested in helping, contact Stephen Fardig at (845) 338-1559 or email vze48gh2@verizon.net.

Renegades Baseball
The Hudson Valley Chapter is looking for your feedback about attending a Renegades Ballgame.   The Chapter would purchase a block of tickets and give to members on a first-come, first-serve basis.  Would you be interested in this kind of an outing?  Week day or weekend?
Contact Sharon Wuttke at (845) 336-6832 or email at esw12401@verizon.net with your feedback.  If there is enough interest, the Chapter would proceed with this outing.

Identy Theft Seminar - Are You Sure You Are You?
The Hudson Valley Chapter will be hosting an informative seminar entitled "Identity Theft - Deter, Detect, Defend" on Thursday, May 21 beginning at 6:00 pm in the Newburgh NY area.  The exact location is yet to be determined, but we are looking at restaurants & hotels near the NYS Thruway interchange, with easy access from the Thruway and Rt 84.
The focus of the evening is how to AVOID becoming a victim of identity theft, but there will also be information about what to do in the event it happens to you.  The chapter hosted this same seminar in Kingston in June 2008, and the positive feedback we received was overwhelming regarding the usefulness of the information.  As a result, the chapter leaders wanted to offer this vital information to as many members within our chapter as possible, offering the seminar a couple more times this year in different locations.  If you'd like this offered in your area, please let us know!
There is no cost to attend, but we will require an RSVP for catering purposes and to ensure we have enough hand-outs for everyone.  For more information or to reserve a space for you and a guest, please contact Deb Kress, Financial Associate Advisor for the Hudson Valley Chapter, at 845-750-6680, or deb.kress@thrivent.com.  More detailed information will be available through church bulletins and a postcard mailing closer to the date.
