On Thursday, May 21, 2009, the Hudson Valley NY Chapter of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans sponsored a Seminar/Dinner event at the Hilton Garden Inn in Newburgh. Forty-four Thrivent members and their guests attended, and enjoyed the food, fellowship and valuable information provided. The featured speaker was Sgt. Wayne Freer, of the City of Kingston Police Department, and the featured topic was Identity Theft. A delicious meal was provided following the seminar portion of the evening. Sgt. Freer provided the attendees with valuable information regarding how to protect oneself from becoming a victim of identity theft, as well as constructive advice as to what to do if you do become a victim. He provided examples of how your identity might be stolen, including "dumpster divers", those individuals who are willing to go through your garbage for the pre-approved credit offers we all get in the mail, to e-mail scams that look like they are legitimate emails from a bank or credit card company with whom you have an account, but which then ask you to provide your private information by following a link from the email. He also mentioned that New York State has passed legislation allowing individuals to "freeze" their credit, preventing anyone from applying for credit in your name. Details about that can be obtained from the Attorney General's office.
The feedback from the attendees was overwhelmingly positive, with many commenting on how useful the information was to them. If anyone would like more information about how to prevent Identity Theft, please feel free to contact our chapter's Financial Associate Advisor, Deb Kress, at 845-750-6680. Many thanks to Sgt. Freer for his time and the great information he shared with us!
Information about future Seminar / Dinner events throughout the Hudson Valley Chapter will be forthcoming in future newsletters and postcard invitations. Don't miss out on the next one!!
Our chapter's ThriventBuilds project for 2009 is progressing well. The house is on 53 Temple Avenue in Newburgh. The actual house construction has been less than previous projects because it is a modular home which was constructed by BOCES students and moved to the site in two very large pieces. Since setting down the two halfs on the foundation, an additional bedroom was constructed, decks constructed on the front and right sides and siding attached on the front and rear. Sheetrock, taping and wiring is being completed inside of the new bedroom. Dedication of the house and presentation to its family is currently scheduled for November. A postcard announcement of the specific date will be sent to Thrivent members when the date is known.
For photos of the progress and more information on the project or how to volunteer you can visit our web site at: http://thriventbuildsnewburgh.org or contact David Adler at dadler@christwoodstock.org
Our chapter also supports the ongoing ThriventBuilds projects to rebuild the Gulf Coast after Hurricane Katrina, There are still openings for volunteers to participate in trips to this region. Information about these projects can be found at the web site: http://www.thriventbuilds.com/worldwide/gulf/index.html

| Chapter Elections and Leadership Positions |
As a membership organization, Thrivent Financial for Lutherans is unique to the financial services world in many ways. Our members choose who will represent them on the national board of directors governing the organization as well as choose their local chapter leadership board. The election process is a very important way for Thrivent Financial for Lutherans to demonstrate two required elements of a fraternal benefit society:
1. An active, viable chapter system that involves many members 2. A representative form of government.
Without this election process, Thrivent Financial for Lutherans would not qualify as a tax-exempt fraternal benefit society and would not be able to provide the benefits to needy individuals, congregations and communities that it does today.
Please exercise your right to vote in your Hudson Valley NY Chapter's leadership board election. A mailing about chapter election dates, time and locations will be mailed this fall. Also please give prayerful consideration to the idea of becoming an active volunteer serving on the Hudson Valley Chapter Board. Please feel free to contact Stephen Färdig at (845) 338-1559 or any Board Member for more information. Visit us at: www.lutheransonline.com/hudsonvalleynychapter
| Thrivent Chapter Support for Member Congregations |

These supplies can be used for coffee hours or any other church functions where they would be useful. Congregation Coordinators should contact our Financial Director, Bob Callahan (robert.bob.callahan@gmail.com), about reimbursement.
