CHURCH and SANCTUARY TERMS

Worshipers that grew up in the church may have a vocabulary that new and young believers are just learning. Here are some terms that you hear concerning the church building and the meaning of them.
Narthex: When you enter most public buildings, the entry way is called the lobby. In the church the entry way is called the narthex. This is the place where we begin to make the transition from the worldly needs and concerns and begin to prepare ourselves to enter God’s house or nave.
Nave: The nave is the big room of the church. In public buildings it would be called the auditorium, where people would watch and listen to an event.
Chancel: The chancel is everything in front of the nave. Usually the chancel and nave are separated by the altar railing.
Sanctuary: This is the most significant part of the church. It is the space where the altar is located. The word “sanctuary” means “holy place.” This is why we adults tell the children to not walk, play, speak loudly here because this is a holy place.
In the sanctuary area we have a number of furnishings there that have special meaning. The Cross is there for us to remember what Jesus did for us on the cross. It also signifies that Jesus is at the center of our worship.
The Altar means “high place.” It is very special to us. It is adorned so that we are able to see how important it is. It is where we have two candles that we light to remind us that Jesus is the Light of the world. We also have the communion ware there. The cup is called the Chalice and the plate is called the Paten. But the most important part of communion are the Words we use to remind us what Jesus did for us and that He is present in the bread and wine.
