St. Peter Lutheran Church
In
1856, the first
German immigrants settled east of Watertown. They held their
first church service in the spring of 1867 at Mud Lake public
school. A log church was erected in 1868 on the south end of the
present cemetery. St. Peter Evangelical Lutheran Church was
formally organized August 3, 1873 and adopted a constitution. The
first parsonage was erected in 1887 and a new gothic church building
was built in 1890 to accommodate a growing congregation.
The old log church served as a school until 1902 when a new school was erected at the same location. The present church structure was built in 1914 with a 70 ft. steeple and pipe organ on 2 acres of land purchased on the west side of the cemetery. It has been remodeled several times. In 1978, the present parsonage was built. A Sunday school addition was completed and dedicated in 1982.
The first called teacher was installed in 1918 and a teacherage erected where the 1890 church stood. The school was moved in 1919 to where the present parsonage stands. Sunday school began in September of 1968 and the following year, St. Peter parochial school consolidated with St. Paul's in Watertown.
In 2001, a new school building along County Rd. 10 in Watertown was dedicated bringing a close to the St. Paul-St. Peter school connected to St. Paul's. The new school was named Christ Community Lutheran School and draws students from several area churches.
